Carretera Mexico Teotihuacan KM 46, San Juan Teotihuacán, Central Mexico

The Basics

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is commonly visited on day trips from nearby Mexico City. See the pyramids from above on a sunrise hot-air balloon ride before exploring the ruins on the ground, or opt for an early-morning tour with an archaeologist to learn the site's history and avoid the crowds that descend later in the day. Teotihuacán highlights include the Moon Plaza, the Sun Pyramid, the Palace of Quetzalpapalotl, and the Temple of Quetzalcoatl (the feathered serpent).

Teotihuacan, Tlatelolco, Guadalupe Shrine and Tequila Tasting Tour
We had a great experience visiting the Teotihuacan temples (not pyramids, temples just like our amazing tour guide Alexa taught us). The tour time was well managed and Alexa really tried to explain everything she knows about the tour and other tourism topics in general. It's offered in Spanish and English.

Teotihuacan: Private Tour From Mexico City
Ivan arrived promptly to scoop our party of four adults. His van smelled and looked freshly clean, with a working AC! Along the ride to Teotihuacan he dispersed bits of local history and also gave us time to talk among ourselves. Ivan was extremely knowledgeable and prepared to answer all of our questions. He brings a pointer and books along so we can visually understand what the site once looked like, a great bonus.
Great tour!

Teotihuacan Early Access tour with Tequila Tasting
Gerson and Hector were very knowledgeable guides. Their Teotihuacan tour was the perfect mix of history, culture, and doing the walks and climbs to view the whole site. And Gerson is a pretty hilarious entertainer too!

Our guide, Eloy, was so passionate and knowledgeable about the history of Teotihuacan. I have studied MesoAmerican history for years and still came away with increased knowledge.

Teotihuacan Pyramids tour
Visiting Teotihuacan is on everyone’s list of “must do” activities in Mexico, and rightly so. However, engaging a good, knowledgeable guide is key to getting the most out of the experience. Daniel knew the ins and outs of the logistical side of things, so he was able to get us everywhere we needed to be without encountering long waits. He also has deep expertise in the history of Teotihuacan as well as in the ongoing research that continues to reveal more of the site’s secrets.
Worth It!

Teotihuacan: Private Tour From Mexico City
My favorite "experience" so far on Viator. Ivan really brought Teotihuacan alive with his expansive knowledge of its history. He was able to answer all of our questions. We never felt rushed. And Ivan is just an all-around nice guy. Very accommodating. I have previously done one of the ~$50 Teotihuacan tours before and am glad that we paid a little extra for a private tour.
A great investment!

Teotihuacan: Private Tour From Mexico City
What a treat to spend the day with a very well travelled archaeologist completing his Phd in a related topic. Fermin was an absolute pleasure with perfect English. We would have loved to spend everyday in CDMX with him. The car was exceptionally clean and our driver Rito was exceptional.

  • On weekends and holidays, a trolley takes visitors from the entry booths to various stops within the site for a small fee.

How to Get There

Located about 30 miles (50 kilometers) northeast of Mexico City, Teotihuacán is accessible by the scenic but long 132D, a winding freeway that can take well over an hour, and 85D, a toll road that will usually get you to the pyramids in about 50 minutes. It's also easy and convenient to take a bus from the Terminal Central del Norte in Mexico City; buses leave at least hourly and are geared toward tourists with limited Spanish skills.

When to Get There

Since locals receive free admission on Sundays, expect more crowds then. Popular Mexican public holidays, such as Independence Day (September 16), the week of Easter, and All Saints Day (November 1) also tend to attract more visitors. In general, in order to beat the crowds, arrive in the early morning either on a private tour or on your own.

Visiting the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe

About a 50-minute drive from Teotihuacán, the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Basílica de Santa María de Guadalupe) is the most-visited religious site in Latin America. In 1531, a man professed to see a vision of the Virgin Mary at the site, and a second image is said to have appeared on his cloak. Millions of worshippers come to the basilica every year to see this sacred cloth, and Our Lady of Guadalupe Day is celebrated December 12.
