3 Days in Miami for First Timers

Curated by Lori Zainowho seeks out sunny, beachy Miami several times a year.

Miami never ceases to wow me, from its endless stretches of white sand to its iconic art deco vibes and pulsating nightlife. Its Latin influence is an ever bigger call—on many snowy days I've daydreamed about eating a Cuban sandwich on Miami Beach and watching a riveting dominoes match on Calle Ocho.

With a nightlife scene to suit all types of party animals, an evening out in this city can mean sexy megaclubs, charming wine bars, or kitschy LGBTQ-friendly haunts—or maybe a combination of all three. Whether you’re here for spring break, to catch some sun, or on a family vacation, Miami is full of attractions to check out. Here’s what to see and do in this Floridian hub on your first visit.

If you visit hot, humid Miami during Atlantic hurricane season (June-November), bring an umbrella and sunblock.

If you only have time for one thing, make it a water adventure via boat.

Day 1

Miami has many iconic neighborhoods, from art deco South Beach to artsy Wynwood and, of course, Little Havana. It can take a while to drive around the large, traffic-clogged city, making a hop-on hop-off bus tour—where you can sit back and enjoy the scenery—a relaxing choice. You'll get to admire highlights such as the Freedom Tower and Versace Mansion.

Hop off the bus in Little Havana to explore the city’s most famous Latin neighborhood. Walk along the Calle Ocho Hall of Fame, chow on traditional Cuban Food at Versailles Restaurant, and salsa the night away at Ball & Chain.

Day 2

It’s not a trip to Florida without a visit to the Everglades. This one-of-a-kind ecosystem is best explored via boat tour, where a guide can point out all the unique wildlife this area features. Don’t forget your mosquito repellent.

Once you’re back in Miami proper, spend the afternoon dipping into the ocean on South Beach. As the sun sets, stroll along Ocean Drive, the famous seafront street in South Beach for its colorful buildings and art deco architecture. Then, stop in any of the lively beachfront cafes and bars for a drink or snack.

Day 3

Boating is one of the best activities to do on a sunny morning in Miami. From private boat rentals complete with your very own captain to booze cruises to Biscayne Bay boat tours, experience the water in whatever way works best for you.

Spend your final afternoon relaxing on the white sands of Miami Beach, which seem to stretch on for miles. Active travelers or families with children should consider banana boat excursions or Jet Ski rentals.
