3 Days in Myrtle Beach for First Timers

Curated by Nick Dauka travel writer and 20-year Southeast Atlantic resident.

I like to think of Myrtle Beach as a classic vacation destination that's shaped by being equidistant from more famous beaches like Ocean City, Md., to the north and Daytona Beach, Fla., to the south. For instance, Myrtle Beach has the timeless charm of an old-school boardwalk that you’d find a few states north, only with more warm weather months. It’s also got the fun in the sun activities you'd find in Florida such as surfing, fishing, and jet skiing, just without the massive crowds.

Best of all, Myrtle Beach is primed for visitors of any age or budget. Get away to what will surely be a new favorite vacation spot and spend three days exploring Myrtle Beach.

Bring long sleeves to enjoy the shoreline in the colder months too.

If you only have time for one thing, make it a surf session.

Day 1

On your first day in Myrtle Beach, put the tourist sites on hold and get acquainted with South Carolina’s natural splendor. Explore the Waccamaw River, a cypress tree-lined area filled with creeks, swamps, and tons of wildlife.

After a tranquil nature walk, spend time on the water in the peaceful side of Myrtle Beach. A guided kayak tour through the Murrells Inlet showcases even more wildlife while giving you a chance to get active outdoors.

Day 2

South Carolina is brimming with Southern charm, perhaps nowhere more than in Charleston. Wake up early and catch a round-trip tour of this city, complete with a boat ride, horse and carriage ride, and tour both the city and the Boone Hall Plantation.

On return from your charming day trip to Charleston, give Myrtle Beach’s history your time of day. Hop aboard a trolley and cruise the streets in search of landmarks that are both historic sites and the filming locations of major motion pictures.

Day 3

On day three, break away from the hustle and bustle of the boardwalk for a bit and take a trip up to North Myrtle Beach. These less crowded waters are ideal for learning how to surf in a private lesson.

Spend your last few hours wandering around one of the tourist hubs of Myrtle Beach, Boardwalk at the Beach. This entertainment center has ample restaurants, attractions, and shopping to keep you busy, including the Gridiron Glory Hall of Fame exhibit.
