Top 15 things to do in ...
Safaga is a working port town but the surrounding area offers some windsurfing, snorkeling, diving, and beaches. However, most visitors head out on shore excursions to Hurghada for a day of watersports or to Luxor to see Luxor Temple, Karnak Temple, the Temple of Hatshepsut, and the Colossi of Memnon. You can also tour the Valley of the Kings in Luxor, home to the final resting place of King Tutankhamun. Almost all shore excursions include round-trip transportation.
There are no tourist facilities at the port and taxis are hard to find.
Visitors planning to head to Luxor would be better served taking a Nile cruise that stops at the Luxor cruise port.
Allow at least nine hours for a Luxor excursion; the city is a 3-hour drive from the port.
Private shore excursions are good value in Egypt and can make for a more personal experience than group tours.
If you arrive in Egypt via cruise ship for a planned excursion, your ship will take care of the visa formalities.
The Safaga port sits about 6 miles (10 kilometers) south of the town of Safaga and roughly 150 miles (241 kilometers) northeast of Luxor, or around a 3-hour drive by car. Public transportation is hot, slow, uncomfortable, and unreliable, so shore excursions that include pickup and drop-off from the port are preferable.
Egyptians in Safaga speak Egyptian Arabic, although local signs and street names are written in both English and Arabic. The local currency is the Egyptian pound, and if you require ATMs you might have to go to Safaga proper.
