The museum is located in downtown Anchorage near Delaney Park and the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts. It's easily reached by bus, and is within walking distance of the railway station. Pay parking is available in the museum’s underground garage.

The Anchorage Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from morning to early evening, and Sundays from noon to early evening; it's closed on Mondays. The museum stays open late on First Fridays. Check the website for free-admission days and to see the schedule of talks, classes, performances, and other special events.

The Smithsonian Arctic Studies Center

Part of the Anchorage Museum, the Smithsonian Arctic Studies Center represents a unique partnership with the Smithsonian Museum, showcasing over 600 objects from the Smithsonian's collections that were chosen and interpreted by Alaska Native elders. Highlights of the center include a 1893 Tlingit war helmet from the village of Taku and a 1935 Inupiaq feast bowl. The center also conducts field studies to learn more about the history and culture of the Arctic region.
