How to get there

You can also hop on the scenic 2 tram, which runs along the Danube River past the Parliament Building and Chain Bridge. Hop off the tram at Vigadó tér, and walk a few steps east to the square.

When to get there

There's really no bad time to visit this bustling square in central Budapest, particularly if you want to do some shopping. And if you love the holidays, don't miss Budapest’s annual Christmas Market in the square. Held from mid-November through Christmas, it features vendors selling everything from handicraft and jewelry to delicious pastries and mulled wine. The spring fair is also a popular attraction, held annually in mid-April.

Visiting the Hungarian Academy of Sciences

After exploring Vörösmarty Square, stroll along the Danube River until you reach the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the country's oldest scientific institution. Marvel at the ornate facade of the neo-Renaissance building, and stop in Széchenyi István tér for fantastic views of the Chain Bridge and Castle Hill. If you arrive on Monday or Friday, between 11am and 4pm, be sure to visit the academy's third floor art gallery.
