Stroll around the wooden storefront shops of Market Street, browsing the local mom and pop shops, stylish boutiques, and art galleries, or dine at one of the many cafes and restaurants opening around a newly revitalized town. The “Rediscover Wailuku” walking tour covers more than 20 historic sites in town, including the Bailey House, one of the first western-style houses on the island, and Iao Theater. Wailuku is also a good base for exploring nearby Iao Valley and the Maui Plantation.

Wailuku is located 5 miles (8 kilometers) from Kahului Airport, the main airport for Maui, and just 2 miles (3 kilometers) from Kahului, and is an easy drive from both locations. There is plenty of free parking around town, including on Market Street. Public transportation options include the Wailuku Loop bus.
You can visit Wailuku year-round. Summers and winters are peak travel times, making spring and fall better times to visit for smaller crowds. Visit on the first Friday of the month for Wailuku First Fridays, a festive town party with live music, entertainment, food and craft vendors, and a beer garden. Wailuku also hosts several events throughout the year, such as the Maui Classical Music Festival in May and the Maui Film Festival in June.
Located just 3 miles (5 kilometers) west of Wailuku, the lush Iao Valley is a popular stop for hikers, sightseers, and nature lovers. It’s home to the 1,200-foot (366-meter) Iao Needle (Kuka Emoku) and a botanical garden, and was the site of a decisive battle where King Kamehameha defeated the warriors of Maui to form the Hawaiian Kingdom.
