Travelers often visit Ometepe Island on a day trip from Managua or Granada. Day tours include round-trip transportation to the island and visits to attractions such as the Butterfly Biosphere Reserve and the San Ramón Waterfall. How to get there

Ometepe Island is on Lake Nicaragua on the southwestern end of Nicaragua, near the Costa Rica border. Ferries run every hour or so from the San Jorge port near Rivas to Moyogalpa, the island’s largest ferry port, and occasionally to the port of San José. You can also fly to Ometepe from Managua.

When to get there

The best time to visit Nicaragua is during the dry season, which runs from November through April. The busiest times tend to be over the holiday season and during the months of February and March. The island’s waterfalls are the most beautiful during the rainy season, though.

Hiking the volcanoes of Ometepe

Hiking to the top of either Concepción or the Maderas volcano is one of the top things to do on Ometepe Island. Going with a guide is mandatory, and both hikes are about equal in difficulty and take an entire day. Concepción is the highest point on Ometepe at 5,280 feet (1,610 meters), and Maderas is the smaller of the two, at 4,573 feet (1,394 meters).
