3 Days in Prague for First Timers

Sammanställt av Katie Nadwornywho's spent the last 15 years loving Prague.

I still remember the first time I arrived in Prague. I was 20 and beginning my study abroad semester. I’d never traveled abroad by myself before. Stepping out into the streets of Prague was like entering a real-life fairy tale, with the ornate Prague Castle looming over the Vltava River and the statues on the Charles Bridge, with the twisting cobblestone streets and soft tolling of bells at Vysehrad. Even after all the time I’ve spent in Prague, I’ll never forget the sense of wonder I experienced the first time I saw the city in all its glory.

The weather in Prague has four distinct seasons, with cold winters and hot summers.

If you only have time for one thing, make it Prague Castle.

Day 1

Begin your first day in Prague at Prague Castle and St. Vitus Cathedral. The large castle complex not only contains an immense amount of Czech history, but it also gives you a viewpoint to look out over the city.

In the afternoon, get a view of Prague from a different angle and head out on a river cruise. The Vlata cuts through the center of Prague and passes under the Charles Bridge and past Kampa Island, giving you an overview of the city from the water.

Day 2

On your second day in Prague, explore Old Town and New Town. Old Town Square is the home of Prague’s astronomical clock, which comes alive every hour. Explore Wenceslas Square in New Town, the central promenade of the city.

Devote some time to the Jewish Quarter, with its historical graveyard and the Spanish Synagogue. As you stroll the evocative streets of this neighborhood, you can learn about Prague’s rich Jewish history.

Day 3

On your third day, it’s time to get deeply acquainted with contemporary Prague. This is a city of color and humor, and you can visit some of its art spaces, graffiti hot spots, and funky clubs throughout the city.

In the evening, get to know Prague’s vibrant nightlife on a pub crawl. Bar culture is strong in Prague, and there’s no better way to taste the Czech spirit than with a cold pilsner in hand.
