The basics

While El Picacho is relatively close to Tegucigalpa, it’s not easy to reach without a vehicle. That makes guided tours a convenient option; the park and statue are stops on some day trips and city tours. Such tours generally include round-trip transport from central locations in Tegucigalpa and range from urban-focused exploration to nature-themed trips to La Tigra National Park.

Things to know before you go

  • Bring snacks if you plan to linger—you can buy food at El Picacho, but the selection is limited.

  • There are generally security guards onsite, and even independent visitors report feeling safe while exploring in the evening.

  • It’s a good place to pick up souvenirs: Small onsite shops often have prices competitive with city markets.

How to get there

El Picacho is directly north of the Tegucigalpa center. While it’s only about 3.6 miles (6 kilometers) from downtown, the trip can be slow—there’s plenty of traffic to navigate, plus the winding road up El Picacho itself. If you’re not visiting as part of a tour, consider taking a taxi; just arrange the return trip before setting out. Or, try a “rapidito,” the mini buses that ply Tegucigalpa streets. Rapiditos for El Picacho are sometimes near the Teatro Nacional (National Theater).

When to get there

El Picacho is generally open daily and remains popular well after dark. Views of the city at night are gorgeous—Tegucigalpa sprawls up surrounding mountains and illuminates hillsides. While some visitors make this a quick stop as part of a city tour, it’s easy to spend longer. Travelers interested in exploring the park’s trails should plan on a 2-3 hour visit.

Best parks to visit in and around Tegucigalpa

The Honduran capital offers plenty of urban exploration but also has opportunities to explore in nature. A 20-minute walk from the city center is Parque La Concordia, with towering trees and reproductions from the Mayan Ruins of Copan. About an hour’s drive outside the city is La Tigra National Park; tours of La Tigra explore trails through cloud forests home to extraordinary biodiversity.
