The basics

Since the Church of St. Charles is among Vienna’s top landmarks, it’s included on many guided tours of the city—with either an interior visit or a stroll past the photogenic exterior. To hear the church’s acoustics in action, it’s also possible to book tickets for a concert there; regular performances feature works by Vivaldi and Mozart, composers with deep ties to Vienna. Tickets to see the church alone can be purchased on-site, and Vienna City Card–holders get discounted admission.

When to get there

Even if there are no lines outside, visitors pile up while waiting to take the elevator to the church’s viewing platform. To avoid delays, showing up first thing in the morning is a good strategy. And while visiting hours extend after sunset, it’s worth arriving during daylight for the full effect of the windows, since natural light shows the frescoes and sculptures at their best.

Attending a concert at the church

Regular performances of classical music turn this landmark church into a stage for musicians, who generally use period instruments for the occasions. Tickets are divided into Category I, Category II, and Category III; the most expensive seats are set closest to the stage. While Category II and Category III are a pretty similar experience, Category I seats earn their premium prices with better views of the musicians. Since evening temperatures in the church can be cool, bring a warm layer to wear during the concert.
