3 Days in Zagreb for First Timers

Sammanställt av Jenna Scatenawho finds Zagreb to be a great introduction to Croatia.

Zagreb often gets overlooked for Croatia’s alluring Dalmatian Coast, but I find the inland capital to be one of the most enthralling cities in Europe. Rich in culture and grand architecture, it’s an easy place to get lost amongst the walkable streets on your first visit.

With this itinerary, I’ll help you explore the city with intention—from its formal museums and galleries to its quirky street art, large urban parks, and delicious local restaurants. In short order, you’ll be absorbed by the welcoming atmosphere of Zagreb. Here's how to spend three days in this charming city.

Beat the crowds and higher temperatures with a May or September trip.

If you only have time for one thing, make it buzzing Tkalciceva Street.

Day 1

Zagreb is small but steeped in history. Rise early on your first day and begin with a local breakfast—try Otto & Frank or Eggspress. Afterwards, take a tour around the city to get your bearings. Don't forget to check out the restaurant and shopping options on Tkalciceva Street.

Discover the city's monument highlights including the Zagreb Cathedral, St. Mark’s Church, and Lotrscak Tower, and enjoy a ride on the funicular. In the afternoon, take a bike tour, with guided commentary and a pit stop at a local cafe to refuel in between taking in the city's beautiful scenery on the road.

Day 2

On day two, take a trip into the countryside to learn more about Croatia's rich heritage. A full-day tour of scenic Varazdin, a baroque town, explores the architectural history of the period and includes a visit to Trakoscan Castle. You'll be immersed in the palaces of the era with painting and furniture collections.

On your return, dine traditionally at Restoran Uspinjaca. If you'd like something more casual, Heritage restaurant serves delicious, healthy Croatian street food. Later, take an atmospheric tour of Zagreb's medieval history on a night tour of the old city.

Day 3

On your final day in Zagreb, venture beyond the city limits on a hike. Begin by ascending a cable car to Sljeme’s peak on Medvednica mountain. Then hike backwards, descending the dense forest to reach Medvedgrad fortress. A photogenic view of the city and its surroundings awaits. Continuing your hike downwards, you'll pass some of Zagreb's most exclusive neighborhoods before arriving back in the city.

Alternatively, try a professional photo tour of the city before you depart. Then, finish your stay with a tour focusing on the wars in the city, including in the 1990s and World War II.
