This was really enlightening for me, I learnt so much about South African history. Our guide, Kgotso, was a prisoner on the island, so he could tell us his experience first-hand. He was kind, good-humoured, knowledgeable. Appreciating the place where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison was shocking. Definitely, a visit that I would recommend for anyone visiting Cape Town or South Africa.

Robben Island is a must see site in Cape Town. The visit was insightful and meaningful, and our guide was one of the ex-prisoners which made it even more special. The Viator escort from our hotel to the ferry site really was unnecessary in our case as we were already staying on the waterfront.

Clients safety comes first! Your refund was processed the same day. If you choose to wait until you are in Cape Town to book the tour. There is a very good chance it will be sold out.

An interesting experience

I would have rated this excursion five stars if we were given enough time to explore a little bit more of the exhibits. It was quite a long talk on the bus but it was very interesting to hear about what an inmate's life was like in the prison. The excursion appeals to people who want to gain an insight into prison life and the history surrounding apartheid in South Africa. Because the original morning booking was cancelled due to bad weather I was placed on an afternoon trip which meant limited time to look at exhibits.

Great if you’re not staying in the V&A Waterfront

We were sent our tickets after booking which helped us not to wait too long in a line. Ivan picked us up on time and safely drove us to the meeting point for the ferry to Robben Island. However, it is my suggestion for those that are staying in the V&A waterfront, to go to the ferry on your own and book your ticket yourself. It’s a fraction of the price and is only a few minutes walk away. We didn’t realize how close we were when booking with viator. We didn’t need to spend an extra $30 for someone to come pick us up when we could have walked in about 10 minutes.

Ivan was great re pickup and drop off from our accommodation. Comfortable ferry ride across with excellent tv documentary on both trips. Moving confronting and horrifying stories from the ex political prisoners who were our guides on the island. Plenty of time to view prison and listen to the guides stories of what it was like to be a prisoner at this hell hole.

Pick up and communication from Ivan was excellent he forwarded the tickets took us to the ferry terminal and waited at clock tower for us at the end and drove us back to our hotel, the trip was informative and interesting- excellent!!

Ferry was late so we couldn’t see museum which was included in ticket. We demand refund. Other people paid $33 for ferry and prison viewing. We were charged $ 73 plus per person with museum which we were not allowed due to last boat has to leave by 6.30 pm. We should be refunded $40 per person total $120 for not getting access to museum.

We did not advertise or mention any museum at all. You booked for the 3pm tour, the ferry leaves at 3pm, as advertised. The hole excursion takes approximately 4 hours. You leave the island at 6:30pm so you can get back to the V&A by 19:00. This makes it 4 hours. Could you please provide us with proof that we included a museum tour on this product?

This was an excellent trip. Pick up and drop off with Ivan was perfect. Excellent day for the boat ride to Robben Island. No wind, calm seas and blue skies. The movie about the history of the island was excellent. Two tour guides both who served time on the island gave a heart wrenching overview of their time there. Everyone should experience history where they can . Man, and it’s predominantly men, ands it’s inhumanity to man is unbelievable.

The booking for the tour...

The booking for the tour has two parts. The first part is pickup/drop-off from your hotel to the Mandela Gateway where you take a boat to Robben Island. The second part is from the Mandela Gateway to Robben Island and back to the gateway. Robben Island tour (second part) was a great experience and absolutely amazing. My rating is a four-star because of the first part of the tour. When booking, it would be helpful if the two parts were priced separately. I stayed within walking distance to the gateway, so I would not need pickup/drop-off. In fact, the driver asked to meet him at the Mandela Gateway! He had nothing to do, except showing the line to the boat. Once you are on the boat, it is a different part. I realized that some websites just sell the tour and if you need pickup/dropoff, you purchase it separately (One friend of mine used such package a day before my tour). Unfortunately, the package sold here was not clear about what is included - it was presented as if that is the price to tour the island. Other than that, I think Robben Island is a no-miss tour if you visit Cape Town.
