What To Expect

This horse-drawn carriage ride and tour, a journey that travels back in time to the colonial beginnings of Charleston, meets at 14 Anson Street, home of the Old South Carriage Company. Charleston, the oldest and second-largest city in South Carolina, is defined by its cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages and pre-Civil-War-era houses.

As the tour progresses, pass by the old churches, antebellum mansions and lush gardens of Charleston — more than 2.5 miles and 30 blocks of residential real estate. Stop outside historic homes, like the Gov. William Aiken House, the former home of South Carolina Governor William Aiken, Jr. This house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

Part of the charm of the tour are the horses that pull the carriage. These are the same kinds of draft horses that worked on American farms in the early 1800s, making this voyage all the more authentic.

The carriage tour was a great ending to our Charleston weekend. The guide (apologies) name escapes me, from Chicago was very knowledgeable. The unfortunate drizzle did not take away from my experience. Enjoyed the tour and this wonderful city!

Historical Review of a Beautiful City
Maryse_L, Apr 2024
Austin was very knowledgeable and was willing to answer any questions we posed to him about the city. Moose, our beautiful equine, was also enjoyable. He had us laughing when he galloped to catch a traffic light as it turned yellow, then slowed way down after it turned red so the cross traffic had to wait and watch his beautiful gait as he crossed the street. Glad we took the trip!
Response from Host, Apr 2024

Star and Ricky are the best!
Timothy_R, Apr 2024
Star, the youngest tour guide at the Old South Carriage Company, was also the best! Being born and raised in Charleston, she knew all about the history and architecture of the area. Also, she was a great carriage driver and Ricky, our very handsome horse, should be the next "employee of the month!"
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Hello, and thank you for your glowing review! Our staff pride themselves on education about the city and our horses, and are passionate about sharing the history. Thank you for visiting, we hope to see you again soon!
Nice experience
LaTonya_O, Apr 2024
We enjoyed learning about Downtown Charleston, along with being out on a Horse and Carriage. The only thing I would’ve wanted different was to be on a more intimate ride with way less people because I felt crammed!!!!
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Hello, Thank you for your kind words. We try to accommodate as many visitors as we can with our tours. We have the newest, cleanest, best padded carriages in the city. I am so sorry you were uncomfortable on the tour, please reach out to Scott B. at 843-723-9712 if you would like to discuss this further.
