Trekking to Machu Picchu is the ONLY way to do it

Trekking to Machu Picchu is the ONLY way to do it. You will feel like you earned the experience and memories. The views along the Inka Trail were stunning. Our fantastic guides (Victor and Alexi) provided clear instruction and valuable historical context along the way. Their guidance let us truly experience the hike and visit the site without worry about logistics. Instead, we got to take it all in from beginning to end. Highly recommended!

A seamless, once-in-a-lifetime experience

I booked the 2D/1N (hotel) tour on a few weeks notice with little comparison to other options, instead relying on the reviews here. Alpaca Expeditions provided a seamless experience from start to finish, exactly as described. And Simon Puma, our friendly guide, enhanced the journey as he provided careful guidance during and thoughtful explanations throughout the trip. I would advise participants to consider their level of fitness as parts of the hike are challenging, including brief, steep ascents/descents without manufactured handholds. Also ensure that you submit your name as stated on your passport when registering as this will be checked at the various Machu Picchu checkpoints. It was a great relief to immediately feel in goods hands with Alpaca Expeditions. Thank you Simon!

A Wonderful experience!

This was the perfect trip, we got to complete the last leg of the Inca trail that arrives at the Sun Gate. Our tour guide Walter was amazing, he provided an excellent balance of stories and facts during the hiking portion which made it an excellent pace as it gave us some time to catch our breath. He was a wealth of knowledge and everything was very well organized. This is a great tour because it gives you 2 chances in to see Machu Picchu. Highly recommend.
Recommended instead of the longer 4 day hike

We were lucky to have an amazing guide - Americo. The day before the hike, during check in, he briefed us a complete plan in step by step manner and put us at ease. The following day, he and taxi driver picked us promptly on time early at 420am to begin our drive to train station. We ate a quick breakfast (at our cost), then boarded the train. The guide may sit in a different rail car then you depending on ticket. After a very scenic train ride (make sure to request seats on left side window if possible), we arrived at KM104 to begin our hike. There is a checkpoint here, so be prepared with your passports. After checkpoint, we got a small snack bag from tour guide (orange, banana, and chocolate bar). We also met our chef who will make our lunch later. The hike continues through beautiful forrest on inca trail. Americo stop by the ruins and explained in great detail and perfect English about Incan culture and history. Along the trail, he would also point out flowers in bloom and birds singing. Americo is wealth of knowledge and was very patient in answering our questions. The lunch was fantastic and was customized to our dietary needs. After reaching Sun Gate, we explored Machu Pichu almost empty. Great time to take some pics here. We stayed at Hotel Jaya, which was at best a 3 star hotel met our needs. Breakfast is included. The next day, we did the Machu Pichu tour bur it felt a bit rushed since there were tons of tourist so there is always someone behind you prodding. The rain also put a show to make this things uncomfortable. The 2 day hike, in my opinion is a much better option then longer 4 day hike. You get to be on Inca trail and explore the forest, you get to see Machu Pichu in evening with almost no tourists. All without gruesome hike of first 2 days in longer hike. I think it was right decision for us as we were able to use those 2 days to explore Cusco and acclimatize instead. The tour company was fantastic. They shared a lot of tips and information before the trip. I would highly recommend this company.
Highly recommend

This tour is a great way to experience the Inca trail without having to do the whole hike! We hiked through the beautiful valley and saw the Sun Gate viewpoint and the classic Machu Picchu viewpoint on the first day. On the second day, we did the Circuit 3 tour at Machu Picchu. The views were so beautiful, the ruins were super cool, and we saw a bunch of llamas. After the Circuit 3 tour, we had a few hours to explore Aguas Calientes, the charming "Machu Picchu town" surrounded by beautiful mountains. We loved the hotel we stayed at. Our room was modern, clean, and cozy and had a jacuzzi :] The hotel customer service was great. Our tour guides, Lucio and Alex, were really kind and knowledgeable. They took great care of the group, made sure everyone got the breaks they needed during the hike, and were happy to take lots of pictures for everyone. We were well fed and given snacks for the hike. The chef and porters cooked up a feast for the mid-hike lunch. We had dinner at a restaurant in Aguas Calientes, where we each got to choose our own appetizer and main course and got dessert too (all included). On the second day, we had breakfast at the hotel (included). I highly recommend this tour and company! It was extremely nice to have everything taken care of for us :-) Thank you, Lucio and Alex!!!
Machuppicchu in November
Giovanni_V, Nov 2023
I had no idea what to expect when I booked this tour. Went in blind not knowing what I signed up for. It was an 8+ hour hike through the history and trails of the Incas! It was such an amazing time. Our guide was so knowledgeable and informative on everything. He went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we need. The hike is intensive, I'm a former Marine and trainned hard physically for a month, in order to prepare for the hike. I will tell you, you should take a day or 2 to in Cuzco to acclimate your body to the elevation. I flew in and went straight to it haha! But it was worth it. The hike gives it that appreciation of Machuppicchu, since you get to witness the views. Great trip, and glad I booked it. Time frame was Nov and the weather was perfect. Not too hot and not too cold.
Our tour guy is very nice...

What not to like traveling with Victor? I can't think of a thing!
Jessie_H, Sep 2023
Victor is very knowledgeable with the history of machu Pichu and Incas. He's passionate about educating us with this history and patiently explaining the details! He also gives good recommendations of good resturants. I love to travel with Victor again and highly recommend him to my friends and families!
An amazing experience

The 2 day/1 night Inca trail with Alpaca Expeditions was an overall amazing experience! From how easy the pickup and transportation was to our amazing guides! David was our leader and was so informative, helpful, encouraging, and patient when I had to go at a slower pace than others. Marcela and Adolfo were equally as helpful and supportive and made my Inca trail experience perfect. Our chef Ramon made a delicious lunch that catered to multiple dietary needs. So many options to choose from! And our porters Alex and Luis were wonderful. Getting to the Sungate was such a fulfilling accomplishment for me. It was nice that after a long day of hiking we went to a group dinner in town. I was happy we were able to see Machu Picchu again the following day with a guided tour from David where we learned more of the Incan culture and got to see it up close. We ended the journey with one more lunch together. I had the best time and made great friends. Absolutely the highlight of my time in Peru. If you want to experience the Inca trail but do not want to do the full 4 days, I highly recommend this tour with Alpaca!
MUST DO
Chandler_H, Jul 2023
An absolute must do if you are wanting to visit Machu Picchu. The hike is unbelievable, the views are incredible, and our guide Walter made it all easy. Walter especially was a phenomenal guide, was extremely knowledgeable and was incredibly attentive throughout the 2 day hike/tour. 10/10 would recommend.
A wonderful 2 days in Machu Picchu
Jamie_M, Apr 2022
The whole experience is amazing. Our guide Luis Chipana spoke excellent English and was extremely knowledgeable. The trek on the first day was incredible, with amazing views throughout and this was done at the pace of our choosing. At the end, you get to see Machu Picchu from the best spot and have as much time as you want to take it all in. The second day involved more viewing spots and actually venturing into Machu Picchu where again, Luis explained in great detail and clarity the various aspects of the site. The lunch and dinner on the first day were also excellent. I couldn’t recommend Luis and the trip itself enough!
