If you've ever wanted to walk through a forest surrounded by butterflies then you need to visit the Butterfly Rain Forest at the Florida Museum of Natural History. See more than 50 species of butterflies fluttering around as well as birds from all over the world. This screened-in exhibit allows for the animals to be exposed to the Florida conditions, making for a more natural environment.

What To Expect

Walk through a lush rainforest environment and discover more than 50 species of butterflies, in addition to birds, turtles, and fish, at the Butterfly Rainforest, a ticketed portion of the Florida Museum of Natural History. Save time by booking your tickets in advance.

Make your way to Powell Hall at the University of Florida in Gainesville and exchange your voucher for a ticket at the admissions desk. Then explore the 6,400-square-foot (595-square-meter) screened in Butterfly Rainforest at your own pace. Interpretive staff are on hand to answer questions.

Afterwards, explore the rest of the Florida Museum of Natural History, including its indoor butterfly exhibits, as well as exhibits on mammoth and mastodon fossils and the native Calusa Indians that inhabited South Florida.

    Butterflies are beautiful. Having been to the butterfly conservatory in Niagara and the Cambridge butterfly exhibit in Cambridge, Canada this exhibit is a bit of a disappointment.

    We were disappointed in the number of butterflies released. The “speaker” was hard to hear. We enjoyed the skeletons exhibit. Had made reservations online but when we got there no one knew anything. I did not receive anything via email. Currently checking back account to make sure I was not charged twice.

    Myself and my 2 grandsons had a great time. The butterflies are beautiful! We also enjoyed the other exhibits about the Florida Indian tribes. I was hoping for atleast 1hr of my grandsons time and we spent 3 hrs in the museum so I think it was a huge success.

    A day at the Butterfly Forest

    As a family celebrating our son's 21st bday and his starting at UF this yr it was a great experience. While reading about the butterflies two butterflies landed on my son at two different time, unfortunately I missed taking a photo. I would definitely recommend this place, not only for the Butterfly forest, but to also learn about all the artifacts and fossils.

    Adults and grandchildren all enjoyed. Unfortunately, too hot of a day to spend as long as we would have like with the butterflies. Spent a cooler time in museum. Very interesting.

    The experience was wonderful. It was peaceful and serene and totally enjoyable. This was our second visit and we will definitely be returning.     Butterflies are able to stand on you if you stay still. After you get out of the butterfly exhibit there is a butterfly seat and you can sit in the middle and have butterfly wings :)
