What To Expect

Meet your guide at the cruise terminal of Le Havre, where you'll begin your full-day private tour of Giverny, Rouen and Honfleur (choose any two out of these three) to see Normandy through the lens of Claude Monet.

Start at Monet's family home and garden in Giverny, approximately 1.5 hours away from Le Havre. The artist and his family lived in this house until he died in 1926, and you'll no doubt recognize some of his most famous painting scenes from the garden – including the Japanese bridge and water lily pond.

Walk through Monet's expansive gardens, imagining the great master at his easel, and then venture inside his former home (now a museum) to see the Japanese prints he collected.

Continue to Rouen, an important city in Medieval Europe. The Gothic Rouen Cathedral has the tallest spire in the country, and features in several Monet paintings as he sought to capture the changing light and shadow at different times of day. Inside the cathedral, don't miss the 13th-century stained glass windows.

Elsewhere in Rouen, see the town's symbolic Great Clock (Gros Horloge) and the square in which Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in 1431. Learn about her heroic voyage across France when the country was in the midst of the Hundred Years' War with England as you walk with your guide through the cobbled streets of the historic town.

Honfleur is your final stop, where you'll see the Medieval fortifications of the Caen Gate (Porte de Caen) and St Catherine's Church, reported to be the biggest wooden church in the whole country. Honfleur was an important port city of ship builders, who built St Catherine's Church after the Hundred Years' War. Walk up to the Côte de Grâce, pilgrimage site dating from the 10th century, for impressive views over Honfleur and the Normandy Bridge.

Monet was one of many Impressionist artists to depict historic Honfleur; others included Johan Jongkind and Eugene Boudin.

At the conclusion of your visit to Honfleur, return to Le Havre – just 30 minutes away by car – where your guide will drop you off back at the port.

Worry-free Shore Excursion:We will ensure your timely return to the Le Havre port for this activity. In the rare event your ship has departed, we will arrange for transportation to the next port-of-call. If your ship is delayed and you are unable to attend this activity, your money will be refunded. Having Marion as our guide made for a wonderful experience. She was lively, informative and engaging. We enjoyed learning about her life in France and her interests and concerns. The garden at Giverny were exceptional and not terribly crowded that day. Overall, it was a great experience.
Highlights of Giverny & Honfleur

Lucie, our guide, was charming, informational, and attentive to our priorities. We spent longer in Giverny than we probably should have, since she was able to provide us with a wonderful lunch spot that took extra time. (What a wonderful surprise!) Had a short visit to Honfleur, but all was perfect for our day's adventure! Just need to come back and spend time in Rouen & Honfleur.
Wonderful day

Fantastic cruise port tour at Le Havre

Excellent ending to our cruise of the British isles. I would never have know. Monet was not Roman’s area of expertise. I had been to Giverny before but the guides knowledge of the museum and house made it so much more interesting. We just loved it. Minivan that picked us up was very comfortable. No trouble finding him at the cruise pier. We had a little bit of rain and couldn’t go to Honfleur right away and he pivoted and took us to Calvados (an apple brandy) experience/distillery. We had said we enjoyed that type of thing. This was an unexpected and added really fun experience. We were really happy. He took us to some really great views and a church overlooking Honfleur. My friends were sort of tired at the end as it was our last cruise day of a long cruise. So we drove through Honfleur on the way back to the ship. Thanks so much. Quality experience.
I still can smell the flowers in Monet's garden; I am within his pictures.

MONET! MONET! and MONET! Everything you could possibly want to learn about the Father of the Impressionist movement. Our guide Roman was a wealth of knowledge about Monet and everything Le Harve. We also toured Giverny and its magnificent church and the spot where Joan of Arc met her demise. Wonderful private tour: the ONLY way to go.
Outstanding tour of Giverney and Honfleur

Our guide Adrian M was knowledgeable of the area and saved us from unnecessary walking. He knew about the parking lot next to Giverney ticket office. He got us there well ahead of the crowds. Ended with lunch at Honfleur. A perfect day!

Our family of two adults and two teenage boys had a wonderful time on this private excursion. As frequent visitors to France, we were especially happy that we were able to customize the tour to our interests and set the pace ourselves. As we had previously visited Roeun, we opted out of visiting it again and instead chose to spend more time in Giverny enjoying Monet's home and gardens. On this particular visit, we were traveling on a cruise making a port of call in Le Havre. Rather than taking a group tour offered through the ship, we booked this fabulous private tour through Viator and were delighted with our choice. Our driver promptly picked us up at the cruise terminal that morning, in a comfortable and clean van and safely drove us to Giverny. She was very knowledgeable and pleasant and she spoke English fluently. We enjoyed the spectacular landscape of Normadie, traveling past scenes of grazing cows and rolling fields. When we arrived early that morning, we simply showed our tickets and entered. Independently, we had previously purchased our tickets online directly through the Fondation Claude Monet, which saved us from waiting in line. We enjoyed visiting at our own pace and after a few hours exploring Monet's gardens, studio and home, we invited our guide to a leisurely lunch in the charming cafe across the way. On our way out of town, she drove us to see the cemetery where Monet's tomb is planted with a flower bed. Then, we drove through the charming town of Giverny, past half-timbered buildings before heading back towards the coast and catching a quick nap in the car on our way to the port of Honfleur. We were familiar with Honfleur from previous vacations, so we simply asked our guide to leave us there to explore on our own. Before doing so, she took a walk through the town with us to the tourist agency and helped us to line up a taxi service to bring us back to the cruise terminal later that evening. She also gave us her private number and told us to call her if the taxi didn't show up. NB: On a separate side note, unrelated to the day's tour, in hindsight, when reserving the taxi, I think we should established a set price with the tourist agency, because the taxi driver whom they recommended took advantage, demanding an exorbitant fee once we arrived at the cruise terminal. At that point, we had no option, but to pay, since we needed to catch the ship. Back to the day, overall, we loved our private excursion to Giverny and Honfleur and highly recommend this company for a private tour. It was so worth the price being able to have a private car/driver/guide for the day and it was one of the highlights of our family's vacation.

What a lovely day with our incredible guide, Karin. She picked us up promptly from our cruise ship, and off we went to Giverny and a great discussion of the local area on the ride. We were travelling with our 8-year-old daughter, and Karin was incredibly patient, pointing out things that were likely to be of interest to children. Her knowledge of Monet and the gardens was vast, and she had genuine answers for every query. We followed with a walking tour of Rouen, and the story of Joan of Arc, particularly aimed at my daughter. She could see we were getting a bit tired by the end of the day and was very accommodating on the pace of the trip. There is no way the cruise line excursion could have come close to the quality of our experience. Highly recommended!
