We enjoyed a very relaxing and scenic trip without any hiccups.
I have travelled on the train once before during the cooler months so would recommend this time of year for a more photographic journey.

Lovely train ride across the South Island. Pass over gorges and rivers, and through tunnels. Wonderful views of New Zealand's beautiful scenery.
Amazing!

The entire journey through the Alps was unforgettable! Very picturesque and peaceful. I throughly enjoyed both ways of the journey!
Stunning trip… booking a little trickier
Julie_C, Mar 2024
The trip was worth doing and views were stunning and varied and very much worth it. The train crew efficient and friendly. The ticketing experience not so warm, wanted to confirm return journey was correctly booked but staff brushed off saying it should be fine… I said I needed a bit more than that as I was flying out next day… not too happy… but came through in the end with return ticket printed. I would have been happy to return booking confirmed but pleased to have ticket in hand.
beautiful journey

When I got off from Arthurs Pass they didn't bring down my luggage, I went up to find it myself. And when I checking in I left my phone on the counter, the staff hand it to the next customer luckily I returned immediately and got my phone back.
Stunning sights interesting history

The stunning views and educational commentary were enjoyable however the train was over an hour late to board and almost 2 hours late to arrive at our destination. This was disappointing.
A trip of two halves

The first class trip Christchurch to Greymouth. Excellent facilities except the only toilet phew !
Good waiting room. Excellent staff and the food and beverages were great. I would recommend travelling First Class as it is worth it.
Trip from Greymouth to Christchurch was ordinary. The station is awful, not enough seating and waiting over an hour because the train was late was not fun and very tiring. What would it cost to put in a few more seats? I consider the return trip was overpriced and would have booked First Class if I had been give the option.
A very enjoyable trip; I would like to do it in the winter-time.

Travelling through the tunnel, which took 15 minutes. The views down through the gorges and mountainsides was spectacular. The blue glacier water was beautiful; crossing over the little bridges was lovely. Only downside was the food was not replenished for the return trip from Greymouth to Christchurch and there was only a small selection available.
Superb train trip through amazing landscape.

The train trip was an excellent way to see and experience the landscape. The train was very comfortable and the on board commentary very informative and presented in a clear manner. The open carriage enabled unhindered photography. This was great value for money and we would highly recommend it.

The spectacular scenery. It's the most beautiful and surprising journey. One minute you are at ground level, and the next minute you are at the top of a mountain pass. And the service you get from the staff is first class all the way.
Epic

Fantastic, well organised, comfortable, great commentary, easy to move around and view the amazing country. The staff were really helpful and pleasant
Long and expensive
Didier_F, Nov 2023
The train was very slow, 5h and only maybe 1,5 h of interesting view.
Very expensive with no drinks included, even water
Really disappointed, I thought it would be more wow!
Spectacular

It was an extremely comfortable ride through beautiful country. It was so nice to let someone else do the driving and sit back and relax and driving a rental car for 2 weeks.

Sat back and enjoyed the beautiful landscape!
Fields, mountains, valleys & gorges.
Forests, lakes, rivers & glaciers.
The TranzAlpine train is a ride to be enjoyed!
Comfortable journey but little to see
Peter_B, Nov 2023
The weather was very poor so very little of the trip was memorable because there were very few views. The final part of the journey following Broken River was quite good as we could actually see something ! The commentary was good but desperately needs updating as a matter of urgency . It is several years out of date.
Fabulous

Loved the scenery.
Loved the open car.
It was a little late leaving but that was well communicated.
A little rain but again didn’t spoil the experience.
Great ride

Scenery was fantastic
What else do you want? Surely I should be able to make my own nude up about what I say.

The scenery cannot be beaten. Every minute was another spectacular sight. Thoroughly recommended for all tourists.
Wonderful journey in amazing NZ
Lucinda, Oct 2023
The train is very comfortable with large windows right up to the ceiling and allocated seating. All suitcases are checked in so only small bags allowed in the seating areas. There is excellent detailed commentary with headphones as you go through the journey. As with all things in NZ the staff are really lovely and welcoming. The food and drink options are extensive and generous. More than anything, of course, is the amazing scenery. We spent a good hour in the outside carriage when going through the most spectacular areas and that is the way to do it if the weather is ok. Rug of and enjoy! Its a beautiful experience and a great way to get from coast to coast.
Very disappointing
Brent_D, Sep 2023
Unfortunately the train was cancelled, bad weather had blown debris on to the track. No ones fault, but the replacement coach trip was poorly organised and chaotic. There was little information provided, just 4 coaches sitting there and a scramble for a seat. Luggage was randomly put on buses and not on the bus we travelled on. Once we arrived in Christchurch we had to wait 45 minutes for all the buses to arrive to get our luggage. The staff were handing out sandwiches and cakes at Greymouth for the trip, but no thought had been put into providing for any dietary issues, leaving myself and others with nothing suitable to eat. No drinks were available either. The staff were doing their best but management has a lot to learn. I can't believe they don't have workable plans in place for when trains are cancelled. Disappointing. We will receive 50% refund but as this was the final day of our holiday and a much anticipated highlight, the refund is meaningless.
