What To Expect

Meet your guide at Glacier Adventures headquarters in Hali, located 8 miles (13 km) east of Jökulsárlón. Set off for Vatnajökull glacier in the morning or afternoon, depending on the departure time selected at booking.

Driving to the location can take 25–45 minutes, based on the best ice cave available, a determination made according to safety and weather conditions. Your guide has local knowledge of the geological features of the region and hunts for ice caves to include on outdoor adventures each season. During the Jeep ride, learn how ice caves are formed and hear about the area's history.

Upon reaching your destination, it's anywhere from a 5- to 60-minute hike to the cave over some gravel, ice, and other Icelandic terrain. If necessary, your guide will help you use the provided helmet, ice axe, harness, and crampons. Soak up an unforgettable experience as you marvel at the magnificent surroundings inside an ice cave, including plenty of photo ops.

Your tour may last between 2.5–5 hours with return 4WD transport to the starting point.

This was THE highlight of our trip to...

This was THE highlight of our trip to Iceland. Please do go on this tour and support the Hali farm business and family, who have been farming for 3 centuries and now also add local, high-quality tours to their farming and hotel. Versteinn was our guide and he is part of the family, very knowledgeable and experienced. A few tips: a. Bring your own crampons if you have extra large feet as they only have one size. My partner is a size 15 and we brought our own. b. Try the food and local Vatnajokull beer at the Hali hotel - the food is from the farm and the beer is made from iceberg water and local Arctic thyme and is only available locally from Skafatell to Hofn. c. Consider staying a couple of nights in the area, there's a lot to do and you maximize your chance of getting to see the ice caves. We only stayed one night and were fortunate because it started to rain and we had the last available tour. The next day's tours were cancelled due to rain. d. There were two tours this year, one at the Crystal ice cave that we went to that is very easy and a more gruelling one that consists of a one hour glacial hike to the cave. The tours change every year as the ice cave formations change yearly.
