We had a very good time at this tour! :) We were only two couples in total driving in a regular car, which is great. Simon, our tour guide, was very nice and kind. While driving from spot to spot, he was always giving us insights into different places and buildings. At each spot, he made sure that we have the best experience and again provided us with all information we need. Throughout the tour, you have the opportunity to pay for two more attractions if you want to. In our case, we did not, so Simon made sure we spend the time otherwise. In our case, we took the time to hike on the Malawati Hill. We highly appreciate the flexibility! And most importantly, we did not only see millions of fire flies but adorable monkeys as well. We can only recommend this tour! You will have a good time. Thank you Simon! :)

The fireflies were cool, but everyone should be advised you don’t actually get to see the blue bioluminescent water they advertise, but they will happily try and upsell you for it. Our boat driver was also very unsafe and nearly hit another boat as well. Additionally we only were on the water about 30 minutes of the entire tour.

Our driver and guide was good. He drove safely through the Kuala Lumpur traffic and gave clear information about the places we visited. The drive is long though because of the amount of traffic in and around KL. The temple was very interesting. It's a shame no photos are allowed inside the temple because it certainly is unique. The visit to Malawati hill was most memorable for the silver leaf monkeys which are adorable. We had to wait quite a long time for our boat ride. The fireflies were visible, but I wouldn't say spectacular. Maybe that's because I've seen them elsewhere. I know people on this trip who had never seen fireflies were thrilled.

Choose a different tour company

I would recommend to anyone to do the firefly boat ride--it was really cool. But take a different tour. There are loads of them out there, and the viator tour was the wrong choice. The first stop temple was so lame. We couldn't go inside and it was on the side of a busy road, so not nice at all. The second stop (the lighthouse) was interesting, and it has fun monkeys to feed, but we didn't get enough time there and instead drove to the firefly boat location an hour early so our driver could try to convince us to add on eagle feeding. We did not want to, nor did we want to eat at the restaurant he took us to buy food, so we had over an hour to do nothing. And then because we didn't do the bioluminescent add-on we sat around another 30 minutes at the end. So unless you want to do every single activity, find a different tour! (And even if you do, I think there are cheaper tour options out there. We only picked this one because we wanted to book same-day and had trouble doing that with another one.) Our driver was nice enough, but he didn't give us much or any information about our stops.

We booked a private trip to escape the standard touristic routes, and all it was is the exact same route but with a car for your group. We visited the indian temple, and it was fun, and also were the monkeys, but when the driver (Sam) took us to the boats for us to have dinner over there, it was terrible! Full of buses with tourists to eat overpriced seafood. We told the driver we did not want to eat there; we want to eat the food that locals eat, not something prepared for tourists! We had to insist a little, but at the end he took us to a local place (with terrible food, but at least it was very cheap) and he understood our thoughts and took us to a less touristic boat. We loved it, and the experience was great!

The guide for the day was excellent and a really nice man who was only too pleased to assist. The other stops were interesting but please be aware the experience of fireflies might not be what you expect, these creates are not flying around the riverbank, they simply flicked in the dark.

Great trip! I expected more fireflies though. Me personally I would skip the blue tears boat ride, not really worth it. The greatest part of the tour was seeing the monkeys! Absolutely amazing experience, especially with kids. Great tour with reasonable price.

We did the trip as 2 adults 4 children. We enjoyed seeing the temple, and enjoyed the monkey park until the driver started throwing food to the children making them frightened after we said we didn’t want to feed them so this was frustrating! There was a lot of waiting around at the jetty as they allow over an hour for you to eat at the Asian restaurant before the trip but to be honest it looked like it would just lead to food poisoning the way everything was stored so we sat around for 1.5 hours before getting on the boat. The fireflies and luminous plankton was great to see. The driver of the boat didn’t say a word the whole trip so you don’t get any local information whilst doing the trip which we were expecting.

Communication was really good via Whatsapp with our guide who sent us a pin for our pick-up just a short distance from our location. He arrived exactly on time and we hopped into the bus. There were about 12 of us in total on the trip which was a nice number. The tour guide was fabulous - very lovely, knowledgeable and explained each part of the tour really well. The first stop was monkey feeding which was fine, nothing to shout about. We then went to a viewing point on a hill where our tour guide shared some knowledge and we had some nice photos. These two stops were 10-15mins for each one which was perfect. We then were meant to go to the temple next but because it was raining we decided to do this after the firefly tour. Our next stop was a small fishing village where the jetty for the firefly tour was and we also had an hour to get some dinner. We went to one of the Thai restaurants which was nice - huge portions! The tour started on time at 7.15pm. We all got on the same boat and another small tour joined us too so there was maybe 20-25 people in total which was a nice crowd. We were told to bring mosquito repellent which everyone applied but we got eaten alive!! Post trip I learned that 50% deet mosquito repellent is the only one that works so I will know for future. I would cover all areas of your skin. My boyfriend got several bites on his face too. We didn't know what to expect but from the pictures we thought there would be hundreds flying around us but this isn't the case. The boat pulls up by the mangroves and shines a flickering light to imitate the fireflies. The flies are in the mangroves and when pitch black you can see them flickering. Again, a bit underwhelming but I think from the photos I had set my expectations too high. We then paid 50 ringgit each to do the algae part of the tour where you see the algae light up. This part of the tour was fine and I'm glad I did it but not sure we would do it again. On the way home we stopped at the temple. They were just about to close but the hindus praying allowed us in so we had our own private tour of the temple. This was stunningly beautiful and was the highlight of the trip.

It was a great experience from start to finish! A knowledgeable driver (LG) picked us up on time from our hotel in a comfortable and airconditioned van. Communication with the driver was great, we knew when he arrived and which car we were supposed to board. He was able to answer many of our questions about the region and overall made it a very enjoyable trip. We even had time to make an extra stop at a temple, which was much appreciated. We also got lucky to experience bioluminescence (optional, for additional fee) in addition to fireflies. It was a great evening, thank you, LG!

Flexible tour

In terms of flexibility and also specifically for a solo traveler, I think his tour is one of the best options among all similar tours. We arrived earlier than the starting time of firefly watching, so we could choose if we do eagle feeding or eat seafood dinner. We could also choose if we see blue tears after the fireflies or not. It was nice that I could decide after getting to the actual place and saw the weather and vibe and everything. (Note that I went on a weekday, so there were still many remaining tickets. Don’t know about weekends) I did find another tour where the dinner is included and still considerably cheaper than this. But that one was for 2 or more people so I couldn’t book that. There were so many fireflies and the experience of eagle feeding and blue tears were nice as well. We arrived at the drop off point around 21:45. When I messaged him via Viator message system before the tour, his reply was quick although it was around 10 pm. A friendly and nice tour guide.

The driver is very good. He is knowledgeable and gives us tips in where to sit on the boat to get the best view. He drove us to see the Indian Temple and the silverleave monkeys. Architecture of the Indian Temple is incredible. Climbing 137 steps to see the light house is a bit challenging for seniors, like us 😅.
