So sorry to hear that the tour wasn't what you expected! We have nearly 20 restaurants partnered on the Downtown Walking Food & History Tour, all of which are locally or regionally owned (with half of the stops always being local). You were on a tour that visited Zim's Cafe (woman and locally-owned by Chef Ouita Michel, longtime standard bearer of Kentucky food and farming), Agave & Rye (started in Kentucky as an EPIC elevated taco experience), Pies & Pints (woman-owned group out of neighboring West Virginia, bringing uniquely crafted pizzas to Downtown Lexington), and The Grove (woman and locally-owned).
Despite our city's perception, Lexington's downtown food culture is very diverse and does not include foods that our state is typically associated with like fried chicken, fried bologna, and hot browns (thank goodness for our health!). While those menu items can be found within driving distance, Downtown Lexington menus represent a blend of influences.
Our tours are very well-researched, with a focus on inclusive, fascinating history. Lexington is a place with mural-lined streets, city supported art initiatives, important galleries, and lots of interesting architecture. You might go to an opera house, an art gallery, a museum, or a shop representative of our city's culture while on the tour (depends on the day). It all tells the story of our city and we're very happy and proud to share it.
We're a local company that works incredibly hard to serve as ambassadors for our city and we understand that we can't win over everyone. But, we'll keep trying anyway!
