Lots of hidden costs, chief guide tried to scam us, but beautiful hike and made it to the summit!
MaryC_D, Jul 2023
Overall, the climb itself was incredible and definitely worth it! (Most of our photos are on our good camera which we haven’t downloaded yet so just phone photos for the review lol) However, we had some issues with this company so I’ll lay out the pros and cons of what we experienced - Pros - we got to the top and back!!! All but one of the crew were amazing - it was unfortunate that the one crew member we had major issues with was the chief guide but I’ll mention that in the cons - everyone else was amazing! The chef was incredible, the porters are unbelievable carrying so much weight so efficiently, and we loved the popcorn and tea time and hot washes that were provided. We had medical checks before starting each day, and although the chief guide took pictures of us on his phone - we never actually got them which is sad but had them take most of the same photos on our camera as well. Cons.. the company doesn’t send you the packing list when you book - only a couple days before the start of the hike, and they don’t tell you that everything on it is mandatory - then they make you pay 2-5x the amount other rental companies in the area charge for bad quality gear. We rented what we thought we’d need from a local rental company - Gilman’s - and they had decent prices for excellent gear! But because we didn’t realize it was all mandatory until the briefing the night before and we were forced to pay for the companies gear - we had our own nice thermals but apparently needed 2 sets and the “thermals” they had were stretched out, thin and worn, and they charged us $20usd per piece to rent. Also we had heard from others that other rental companies send this list as soon as you book and also send recommendations for altitude sickness tablets to get and prepare to take prior to coming - we had done our research and got them but it would’ve been nice to have that recommendation when we booked. They also upsell you on oxygen - $190usd - and although we didn’t use it we can see the possibility of needing it and got it for peace of mind, but just another hidden cost to keep in mind. Additionally, this company gives you the estimated ranges for tips that are $10usd more per person per day than the average tip other companies recommend - we did our research and looked at other companies so just know that this particular company will charge you more than the average - whether they don’t pay their employees as much I’m not sure, but it was a little surprising when we had numbers in our head for budgeting purposes and then they tell you something so much more. Then the hike - we had a chief guide named Haji - who deliberately tried to scam us out of money on the hike by lying to us saying there were 9 porters when there were only 6. (You have to tip each porter per day so it adds up pretty quick). Then he tried to tell me it was my fault my husband got altitude sickness because I hiked too fast and harassed me about it bringing it up 10-20x per day. He tried to “punish” me I suppose and made me hike slower to the point where multiple other groups were passing us, not that’s it’s a competition but he knew we wanted to hike a little faster and intentionally made us go really slow, then said “fine you want to go fast - RUN” and took off running up the mountain without us. When the porters came to take our bags at the end of the day he gave them his instead of ours. And he yelled at us for taking malaria tablets when his information is dated, and when I tried to explain (I’m a registered nurse) he wouldn’t have it and spoke over me and argued until I wasn’t allowed to say anything else. I contacted the company after with my complaints (there were more about Haji but I won’t bore you with the details) and they said they were keeping him on in the company and will have a talk to him, so who knows if he will change just be wary of a guide named Haji if you do end up booking with this company. They also never offered to play music like other groups, other groups had chants and got stories and we just got the bare minimum. But the hike is beautiful so it is what you make it! I hope this helps in your decision on what company to go with - there are so many companies out there and the hike is so so amazing!!!!

This trip exceeded all expectations. The team was absolutely incredible every step of the way. There is no way that we would have made it without them. William and Goodluck were the best guides that you could ask for. They were so encouraging and fun! If you are thinking about doing Kilimanjaro I would recommend this group for an amazing time.

Me and my family of four can not recommend this company highly enough. Our guides Cheif William and assistant Touleza(sp) were fun, super informative and helpful). We felt taken care of from the beginning to our sunrise summit to our descent! We were also very impressed with the knowledge of the guides of the flora and fauna along the way Super experience!
