What To Expect

Begin with 7am pickup in Nairobi, then travel to Lake Naivasha and Hell’s Gate National Park, with a break to get views of the Great Rift Valley from a scenic overlook along the way. Upon arriving in the park, begin a guided bike tour: watch for herds of Thompson’s gazelle, eland, zebra, and hartebeest as you ride. Keep an eye on the sky throughout the tour, as Hell’s Gate National Park is home to more than 100 species of birds, including Verreaux’s eagles, augur buzzards, vulture, and swifts.

Continue on foot into the park’s distinctive gorges, where narrow passageways and caves are sunk into sedimentary rock. After your walk, stop by a local Maasai community to learn about traditional life and customs in the Great Rift Valley, then head to Naivasha Fisherman’s camp for lunch (own expense).

For an additional fee, you can explore Lake Naivasha wildlife on a boat tour. Spot the hippos that linger just at the surface of the water, and see some of the diverse birdlife; African fish eagles, lesser flamingos, African spoonbill, and little grebe are all common here. In late afternoon, begin the return trip to Nairobi.

This was one of the coolest experiences! Stephen picked me up at like 7am and we drove for 2 hours. He was such a great tour guide and had a ton of history about Kenya and Nairobi to share which was cool. We stopped at a viewpoint of the valley about an hour or so in. There was a little market there and you should definitely barter (I was so jet lagged that I wayyyy over paid) but had some cute things. Then we headed to the park. We saw so many animals on our drive in! We then got set up with bikes and met up with another tour group, so it was the 3 of us biking around. Definitely test out a bike that feels comfortable, you’ll be on it for over an hour. Our tour guide at the park was great. He was so informative and taught us so many things about the animals and the history of the landscape. Definitely wear sunscreen, you are in the direct sun for over an hour. After that we went to see the hippos. You do have to pay a couple hundred shillings so make sure you have cash. I didn’t and Stephen was amazing and found me an atm so I could grab some cash. The hippos were so cool and the boat ride was really fun. After that Stephen took me to a great place for lunch. It cost maybe a couple hundred shilling. We then drove back to Nairobi. We did hit horrible traffic so it took maybe closer to 3.5 hours to get back. I would recommend bringing snacks just because you won’t eat till like 2pm. But otherwise Stephen was amazing and this tour was so freaking cool. This was the first thing I did when I was in Kenya and being able to bike next to giraffes and zebras is something I can’t even put into words! Highly recommend this tour!

Fantastic Trip to Hell's Gate and Lake Naivasha
Rosalind_H, Apr 2024
An excellent experience traveling to Hell's Gate and Lake Naivasha while it was rainy and green! All of my guides (my driver, cycle guide at Hell's Gate, lake guide and Crescent Island guide) were fantastic and incredibly knowledgable and kind.

Cool and unique experience
Katharine_T, Mar 2024
Cycling through the park was such a cool and unique experience! Our guides were great and we had an awesome time. The boat ride too was really fun and a good way to see hippos up close (although not too close!). Make sure you leave on time to get to the park early and avoid the heat (our driver was very punctual but we ran a bit behind ourselves), and lather up on sunscreen as you’ll be out in the sun for a while. Would def recommend doing!

Very fun and a must do trip!
Aravinth_K, Sep 2023
I was picked up at 7am by Johnson who was an excellent driver (much needed when driving along the roads in Kenya). It took about 2hr30mins to reach Hell's Gate. (you stop half way at the Great Rift Valley which I didn't realise at the time of booking but is cool - though don't feel obligated to walk away from the guy trying to sell stuff in the shop). Like other reviewers have stated ,the bikes are not in the best of shape (you get to try different ones so you can find one which works for you). In the park you see a whole host of wildlife (zebra, warthogs and giraffes etc.) quite close up. There's also an option to do some rock-climbing (though I didn't). Whilst you get to go visit apart of the gorges, due to government orders, the main sector is currently out of bounds for visitors. After the bike ride we went straight to the Lake (due to the weather, the tour operator decided that we do lunch after since there was potential for rain to come so I would recommend bringing some snacks to help keep you going). The $25 fee for lake is defo worth it as you get one of the best views of hippos in Kenya. Lunch was very tasty and cost 1800 khs (1500 for the fresh fish and chips and 300 for a juice). Just to note, because of the late lunch (I ate around 2:30pm) the buffet was closed and there was only the aforementioned food choice.

Great Excursion
Roger_C, Jul 2023
This excursion was truly the highlight of my trip to Kenya. From the driver Surfic picking us up and sharing his knowledge during the drive to the reserve, to the bike tour with chance which exceeded my highest expectation!! I would recommend anyone coming to Nairobi to book this bike tour, it’s totally worth it!
Response from Host, Jul 2023
Hi Thank you for your five star rating and an impressive general experience with our driver and product. We're honored to serve you. We look forward to seeing you next time. Best Victor
Super fun trip, definitely an experience worth making!
Alison_S, May 2023
I deeply enjoyed this trip and would absolutely recommend it! My driver, Dennis, was perfectly punctual, super friendly, and a very conscientious driver. At the park, we met Reagan, who was my guide. He was super competent and taught me loads about the local wildlife, but was also just a fun guy to be around. If you do this, I would recommend trying to get to the park earlier as that's when the wildlife is most active. By the end of the tour - around midday - it was quite hot and the animals had left to find shade. The Lake Naivasha resorts are really calm and scenic, so you could spend the night before at one of them and then head to the park from there, which should only take a few minutes!
Response from Host, May 2023
Hello We are glad to hear from your review about your whole trip experience. This will help us maintain quality services at all times for our enormous guests all throughout the year and in future Regards Onyango Victor

Shirley_S, May 2023
My driver Mr. Dennis picked me up from my hotel in Nairobi and drove me to Hell's Gate. It took approx 2 hours to get there. Having an experienced driver is a must since the are lots of truckers on the 2 lane road. Mr. Dennis recommended a boat safari afterwards, which was a fantastic trip.
Response from Host, May 2023
Hi Shirley Its with much pleasure we hear of your amazing safari with our guide. Using this experience, we believe and hope to see you again for your future safaris. Regards Victor
Smooth and interesting trip.
Marja_E, Mar 2023
Driver was on time and drove carefully. Bike trip was great although my guide was not super proactive in pointing out interesting things / animals. We saw a lot of zebras, buffaloes, gazelles and pumbas, and a few giraffes - a bit further away. The boat trip was nice and the boat guide was very knowledgeable. Smooth trip!
Response from Host, Mar 2023
Hello Marja, Thank you for writing us your review. We are glad that you enjoyed your tour while seeing wildlife at Hell's Gate and the boat ride at Lake Naivasha. We hope to conduct another exciting tour for you in the near future. Regards, Latifa.

Kentaro_I, Dec 2022
I visited Nairobi for a short business trip, and this one-day tour on the day off became a highlight. My guide, Peter, was a very kind person. Also, he is very professional, having good knowledge of animals, plants, geology and even insects. I was first impressed with the magnificent scenery of volcanic terrein. Although it is said that the number of animals is few compared to other national parks in Kenya, I was able to spot many animals, including zebras, giraffes, gazelles, impalas, etc.. In particular, one can enter such a park by bicycle, which must make you feel good. The road by bicycle is not long, but it was bumpy and has a slight slope the whole way. Additionary, because the place is high-land (approx. 2000 m), oxigen level would be bit lower than that in place where you usually live. So, I recommend you to keep your pace slow.
Response from Host, Dec 2022

We are glad you choose our company for yoy trip to Hells gate, we are more that pleased that the tour went on smoothly, with you loving the adventure and lerning alot. Karibu Kenya! Regards, Faith.
Incredible experience of a lifetime!
ChariseMorganJoseph, Oct 2022
An easy favorite tour, even with the gorge closed until December 2022! Tour guide Sammie was fantastic and patient. The park is stunning; make sure you cycle through it for the best experience!
Response from Host, Oct 2022
Hi Charise, Thank you for a great review. We are happy to hear you had an amazing time in the Hells Gate national park and bike tour. Our guide Sammy is very knowledagable and always very informative. We hope to serve you again and many others in the future. Regards, Faith.
Good experience….but better bikes are needed
Michaela_L, Oct 2022
4 of us were picked up by George promptly at 0645. We took an ~2hr drive (saw baboons along the way) to a spot where we picked out our bikes just outside of the park’s gate. I would have given this review 5 stars but all of the bikes were In very poor condition. 3 out of our 4 bikes had issues along the way but our bike tour guide did the best he could to make our journey feasible. We saw zebras, gazelles, warthogs, monkeys and giraffe…..it was amazing! After the bike portion, we drove to Lake Naivasha for lunch and a boat tour. The lunch was decent (vegetarian curry) and very reasonably priced. Thunderstorms and rain kept us from doing the boat tour but that was ok…we were tired from the bike portion 😊. George brought us back safely around 6pm. Even though it was a long day, I would do it again.
Response from Host, Oct 2022
Hi Michael, Thank you for taking time to give us your review. Am glad to know you enjoyed the tour and a taste of the our cuisine. Even after the unexpected change in the weather conditions compliments on the tour selection. Thanks for letting us know about the situation with the bikes we apologize for this and we shall work on it. Thank you for spreading the good word we hope to serve you again in the near future. Best regards, Beatrice.
Michael_R, Jul 2022
For the Buffalo Circuit, the bikes were perilous to ride, and you should insist on a helmet. Additionally, if you decide to lunch, you should be prepared to pay for the driver’s lunch, which is expected in addition to the driver’s tip. The takeaway? Make sure you understand the details before deciding on this.
Response from Host, Jul 2022
Halo Michael; Yes we offer helmets at the gate. Most clients dont ask for them but we will ensure they put them on. we apologize you found the rides to be perilious since all of our clients have enjoyed this to be the highlight of the trip and the reason why they booked the tour. If the client offers to buy the driver lunch, some drivers dont refuse. But its not a must you buy them Lunch. Thank you for your generousity.
Fantastic way to spend a day outside of Nairobi
John_B, Jul 2022
This trip was an unparalleled way to get close to nature. All the animals look a whole lot larger when you’re not in a safari truck! The boat tour was also well worth the detour, lots of hippos and the best bird watching I’ve ever been around. They don’t take credit cards at the boat launch so remember to bring cash!
Amazing and interesting
Andrew_M, Jul 2022
I had an amazing solo trip. It started in the morning by being picked up by Douglas(who was very prompt on time) and was toured at the park by Gadafi. Gadafi is an expert on his field. Lastly, the boat ride was fully worth the optional $25 in my oppinion. A lot of memories and photographs to share!
Highly Recommend
Alina_B, Jun 2022
Great day trip from Nairobi and completely worth it!! Our driver Steven was timely and shared interesting information about Kenya along the drive. Gaddafi was an amazing tour guide and really encouraged us throughout the bike ride. He went out of his way to take us through the magnificent gorge and show us the iconic spots that inspired the lion king motion picture. After biking through Hell’s Gate, the boat ride on lake Naivasha was a relaxing end to the trip and well worth it! Highly recommend!!
Response from Host, Jun 2022

Hell's Gate National Park and Lake Navisha (bike/boat)
Kimberly_B, Mar 2022
Loved it! Great ride (select bike wisely), very good guide with a lot of knowledge, (and a very safe driver), the canyon was closed but still wonderful. Boat trip was worth the price! fair warning bring a hat and lunch is expensive.

African fish eagle catching fish at Lake Naivasha
Dumi_J, Dec 2021
Though the drive from Nairobi to Hell’s gate was long, it was worth it. We enjoyed the bike ride in the park, surrounded by nature, zebra, buffalos and warthogs. The boat ride at lake Naivasha was great, the highlight was watching and capturing a video of the African fish eagle catching a fish.
Response from Host, Dec 2021
Thanks for the awesome review, Dumi, We work hard to meet expectations like yours, and we’re happy to hear we hit the mark for you despite the long distance from Nairobi to the park. Sure, the park is magnificient with animals walking freely as you ride through the park. Am glad you had a chance to capture the memorable moment at the lake. Thank you and wish you a lovely time and we look forward to having you again in the future.
Great trip and super day...
Darja_S, Dec 2021
Great trip and super day trip to escape Nairobi city. You might not see as many animals as in other parks but it's worth it, because the cycling gives a really nice touch! Would definitely recommend!
Response from Host, Dec 2021
Thank you Darja for the amazing review. Sure, the park is home to less animals compared to other major parks but the views itself in the park and actvities such as cycling and walking are splendorous. We look forward to hearing from you in future for more adventurous experinces .
Really fun tour! Nice change from game drives!
TianXiang_L, Dec 2021
Very fun activity where you get to cycle about 16km within the park (beware - it's VERY bumpy and the bike seats are very uncomfy - so you've been warned! Bring butt cushions!) - totally worth it. You get to see animals up close and personal - we saw families of warthogs, hyraxes, a giraffe up close! waterbuffalos, eagles, birds....we also got to visit a natural hot spring and get nice views after a short hike. We were with a guide called Shem and he was very good - try and get him! Very knowledgable, patient and friendly - takes good photos too, which is a bonus! Thanks again to Jimmy for driving us out there and looking after us on the tour!
Response from Host, Dec 2021
Hello, Thank you for leaving us your genuine review. We are pleased to read that you had an amazing time and Jimmy did an excellent job. He always works hard to ensure our clients have the best experience. Biking at Hell's gate indeed always gives viewing the wildlife at it's natural habitat. One of the best experience for bikers. We welcome you to have another tour as we explore more of attractions in Kenya.
