What To Expect

Broadway’s theatrical performances date back as far as 1750, when actors/managers Walter Murray and Thomas Kean established a resident theater company on Nassau Street. They presented Shakespeare plays and ballad operas, which served as the start of the theater in New York City. Today, Broadway performances are presented in 40 professional theaters with 500 or more seats in each.

Meet this tour’s thespian guide at the TKTS ticket booth in Times Square to begin a behind-the-scenes look at the theater industry. Learn about the history of Broadway and hear some fascinating stories about the performances and stars that have graced its stages.

Stop at One Shubert Alley, Broadway’s oldest and most exclusive gift store. There’s Sardi’s restaurant, the toast of Broadway for more than 90 years. Check out the caricatures of showbiz celebs on the walls of this legendary Times Square Continental eatery. Walk down 42nd Street, home to many a Broadway theater. Visit the Hotel Edison NYC, surrounded on all sides by Broadway theaters, and the Church of St Mary the Virgin, aka Smokey Mary’s, a New York City landmark known for its use of incense at services. And finally, check out the bronze statue depicting American composer, playwright, actor and producer George M. Cohan.

The tour is a perfect precursor to seeing any Broadway show.

Great info on the theaters and who they were named for
Renee_L, Mar 2024
John was excellent. Very knowledgeable about the history of each theater and sprinkled in Broadway superstitions and interesting stories. Highly recommended. Short- about an hour but lots of info in that time

Loved learning about the history of the theater district! Our guide was very informative! I will look at the theaters in a new light now.
No go!
Suzanne_O, Oct 2023
This tour was promoted as having a Broadway performer as the guide. Our guide was a college student with no performance experience. Very disappointed in Viator and in the past have been pleased with tours. This one was a busy.

Our tour guide Chris was very friendly, funny and informative. He took us to at least a half a dozen spots to tell us about the theaters and historical shows and people. He had an iPad to also show us original photos of the locations.
A Broadway Must!
JamesTaplie_C, Mar 2023
This tour was more than I could have asked. Having two kids who love Theatre and all the the things involved it was so informative! Chris was amazing!! Answered all the questions and more!! He even stayed after the tour was over and answered all the questions! I asked my 16 year old what the best part was and he said “The Advice!” I wish I could give this more than 5 stars. I will say the only down side was it being so cold and windy but you can’t control that.
Meh
Patrick_M, Feb 2023
This was fair. Not horrible, not mind-blowing. Wouldn’t really recommend it. Guide was personable but the highlights of the tour were limited. Little history or intrigue. We spent too much time talking about the M&M store.

We throughly enjoyed this tour. Our tour guide Tim was fabulous full of information, just what we were looking for. He was easy to find and got us going right away. We had a nice walk through Times square, learned so much, then the theatre district, learned even more, and even got to see some hidden gems, inside, which was nice as it was a cool windy day. We came away from this tour saying “wow had no idea”. Thank you Tim we learned a lot!
Vicarious joy in Times Square

Hearing Laura talk about some of the history behind the theatres and her weaving in her own personal experiences made it a memorable tour.

Theo had great energy and enthusiasm. He needs to know a bit more theatre history about the Astor Place riots and why each theater is named for who it is named for.
Great tour!
Martha_M, Jun 2022
Chris was a great guide and provided lots of interesting - and often unknown - facts about the theaters, the plays, and actors. Highly recommend the tour.
