What To Expect

Your day trip from Rome to Orvieto and Assisi starts as you leave the city by coach, heading north along the River Tiber toward the region of Umbria, a picturesque piece of central Italy that neighbors Tuscany. After an approximate 1.5-hour drive, arrive in Orvieto, a hill town that seems to rise dramatically out of the volcanic rock it’s perched on and is known for its long history dating back to the Etruscans.

Explore town on foot, enjoying the Italian charm and passing by many churches, particularly Orvieto Cathedral, a Gothic structure that dates back to the late 1200s and is noted for its stained glass, sculptures and mosaics.

Back on your coach, continue across the rolling landscapes toward Lake Trasimeno, where you’ll stop for lunch. Then head to Assisi, a World Heritage–listed town famed for being the birthplace of St Francis of Assisi, a patron saint of Italy and one of the most legendary figures in religious history.

Take a walking tour of town to see sites related to St Francis’ life, including the stall where he is thought to have been born, his former home and the place where he vowed to dedicate his life to the church. You’ll also learn about Assisi’s other hometown saint, St Clare, one of St Francis’ followers. Visit both the Convent of Santa Chiara, named for her, and the Basilica di San Francesco, dedicated to St Francis, plus see other Assisi sights like Piazza del Comune, Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, the town hall and the Roman Temple of Minerva.

Return to your coach to start the drive from Assisi to Rome, stopping on the way in Santa Maria degli Angeli to visit its 9th-century basilica where St Francis is said to have worshipped. Your day trip ends when you arrive back in Rome.

The best day trip excursion by far! The town's are absolutely beautiful. The guide was patient with my Mom, as she is older and it took her longer to walk (she did keep up). The towns were quaint, the history rich and people in every town welcomed visitors. The local lunch was so delicious and we met some really great folks talking the tour with us as well. Orvieto had wonderful local artisan shops. Assisi was a very rich history and spiritual experience for me personally. The countryside is breathtaking. The tour is highly recommended, my Mother and Sisters totally enjoyed this experience.

Great experience
Josephine_C, Dec 2023
The tour is a very nice and organized from green line tours. Cristina our guide was very pleasant and knowledgeable as well as Mary our guide in Assisi Giovanni our driver was very good and careful even on the narrowest and bumpiest road which I appreciate very much being I get car sick very easily. Very comfortable bus ride Orvieto and St Francis highly recommended especially with this tour people . We had a great time .
Great Experience

A must for everyone. A lot is covered in a short amount of time and definitely worth every penny. Eduardo , the tour manager was fantastic.
The cross at St Francis’ conversion
Eric_G, Nov 2023
Many interesting items , but the cross at St Francis conversion really touched me. The tour guides and bus driver were nice and informative.
Wonderful excursion!
Theresa_P, Nov 2023
This was a great trip! Our guide was excellent and seemed to really care about everyone on the trip. Orvieto was a lovely little town with a beautiful cathedral. We were also able to buy a couple of bottles of the well known local wine. In Assisi we had a local guide who was also very good. We enjoyed the tour of the town and seeing St Clare’s and St Francis’ Basilicas. The lunch was pretty good as well.
Assisi is amazing
jdavidstewart, Oct 2023
Our stop at Orvieto the historic beautiful church was interesting with amazing architecture & statues. It cost 5 euros & was self guided but well worth it. The included lunch at the next stop was fine. We enjoyed the scenic drive & getting away from the hectic pace of Rome for a day. The main attraction was Assisi. A local guide provided an excellent history of St Clare, St Francis & the medieval town. If you are interested in St Francis you need to see this. We saw his relics, his parents home & chapel, & the church built for St Francis after his death but no photos inside are allowed. There is also plenty of shopping & we had a little time for it, but wish we had more. Our tour guide (Sandra?) was very pleasant & helpful as was the young male assistant in training. She was attentive to our needs & did her best to accommodate our needs. The bus driver (Mario?) did an excellent job driving, we were so impressed with his skill. It was a long day, 13 hours & physically challenging. If you aren’t in good shape or have mobility issues, you will have difficulty. There are lots of steps, steep & uneven walkways. Otherwise I would recommend it for those interested in St Frances or history.
Not enough time in Assisi
Gema_R, Oct 2023
The churches were absolutely beautiful! There is not enough time for both Assisi and Orvieto. The air conditioning was not working properly in the bus. It was hot and I felt sick! The driver and tour guide were very nice!
Response from Host, Nov 2023
Thank you for your kind feedback, the air conditioning being October , is more moderate to prevent passengers from getting sick. Thank you Kind regards Pina
Beautiful places but unorganized!
Melinda_B, Oct 2023
Assisi and Orvieto were beautiful places. The tour was pretty inefficient and unorganized. In Orvieto we were not explained anything and didn’t get enough free time. In Assisi the guides were frazzled and spent majority of time giving us painting background with only 20 mins to spare to get dessert, use toilet and buy souvenirs which was unrealistic. Overall would recommend these towns but either plan it yourself or a different tour agency.

A must trip when visiting Italy. Lunch was nice but the bus needed some new shocks - a very rough ride. Guides were kind and very informative. It is a very long day.
A long day for a large sum and very poor lunch.
Miriam_R, Oct 2023
We hardly had time in Orvieto and the lunch was poor. A thin hamburger with very small salad, no dessert and you had to pay for water or beverages. The restaurant way out in the country, a long drive for nothing. The tour was quite a walk up hill down hill and hurried.
Response from Host, Nov 2023
Dear Kind all We are sorry for your disappoint regarding the lunch usually customers are satisfied of it, however we are allerting our supplier. Kind regards
You won’t regret it- beautiful.

Christina is a wonderful tour guide- articulate, intelligent, respectful. Perfect English. The best! Driver was also awesome. Wonderful outing from Rome to Orvieto and Assisi. You’ll want to go back to Assisi as it deserves more time. I didn’t give 5 stars as the Assisi tour guide threw in a lot of unnecessary things somewhat disrespectful, for the town of St. Francis who was all about love. That was my only criticism. Great to sit back a day and be chauffeured I. Great little bus! Well worth it!! And again, Christina is the best tour guide you will find forRome and countryside. Wish she could also do Assisi.
Great Tour
Maria_M, Sep 2023
Our guide, Christina and driver, Francesco were wonderful! Christina did an amazing job at giving us wonderful details throughout the entire day. We had plenty of time to see all that Orvieta and Assisi had to offer. Lunch had the most delicious lasagna and their wine was great! The tour guide in Assisi, Simona, was very informative. The history, culture and beauty were captivating. I highly recommend this tour as it includes many sights and history all wrapped up in one day!!!
A great experience

The tour was well...
Claire_G, Sep 2023
The tour was well explained. The meal was a disaster. It was meant to be lasagne but was just layers of pasta with hardly any meat sauce and no bechamel The salad served with the second course was not fresh. It was wilted. There was no dessert or coffee after the meal.

Dear Kind customer We apologize for your disappointment with lunch , our clients are usually satisfied of it . I'm going to investigate Thank you Kind regards
beautiful day trips from Rome
Catherine_N, Sep 2023
Orvietto is a charming little town that we took a funicular to get to. There is an interesting church there that I wish was part of the tour. I spent the 5 Euros to get in, but it would have been nice to have a guide. My suggestion is to have that included with the tour. Assisi was another charming place. We had a local guide that was excellent. She was informative but also funny. I enjoyed her. What I didn't like about this tour was the lunch spot. Food was meh and they charged for water. Really? Water? The place had no charm even though we were close to a lake. Maybe find a cute little place with a view of something if the food is going to be just okay. Also, our guide that accompanied us all day really did not do much. She didn't share much history or info about places we were visiting or driving past. Also, beware! We left at 7:15am and did not return until about 8:30 pm. Long day!!
Very memorable trip, I will love to do it again
Dije_G, Sep 2023
Although alone, I never felt alone. The lift trip at Orvieto and the magnificent church were very captivating. I love Assisi and and what I read before came alive. Both guides did a wonderful job of bringing to life history. Thanks for the experience, expect me and my family next time!
Christina and our driver...
edgeli_a, Sep 2023
Christina and our driver were both great. We were well taken care of the whole time. It was also very important to us that we were given times for going to the washroom during the trip especially on a bus tour. We also liked that lunch is included so we were able to sit and actually relax and enjoy the food and weren’t rushed.
Viator Day Trip well worth it
Rosanna_R, Aug 2023
Loved the whole day, with both Orvieto and Assisi exceeding my expectations. Cristina our tour guide was fantastic.
Response from Host, Aug 2023

Very Historical.... Spiritual... Wonderful Tour!!!
MARLON_O, Jul 2023
The church in Orvieto is so awesome... walking on the old and narrow streets in Orvieto is a wonderful experience. Assisi is the highlight of the tour....something like a spiritual tour. Our tour guide is knowledgeable. The stories she told us are very interesting especially on St. Francis and St. Clare. Our bus is so futuristic, so comfortable and brand new with huge glass windows where you can easily see the beautiful views during the trip.
The irony of Assisi
Kathleen_K, Jul 2023
The ride through the countryside with the guide narrating was so interesting. Being in the old town of Orvieto and the chance to walk around and shop was delightful. Lunch was excellent. A good choice. And lastly, seeing Assisi. We did see some irony in the life of Francis and the ornateness of the churches! What would Francis think? I guess the Church just can't help itself!
Response from Host, Jul 2023
Thank you for your thrilled comment! Have a good day! Kind regards
Buyer Beware
Alyson_M, Jul 2023
My review is mixed, but unfortunately, the travel experience outweighed the tour itself. First, the meeting spot was easy to find and the tour guide was on time. It was a nice-sized group. We walked to a bus that looked like it was from a third-world country. The rubber was falling off of the steps, it was dirty, the floor was sticky, arm rests were missing from the seats, and there was NO AIR CONDITIONING. It was over 100°F, and although I was reticent to take a 12-hour tour, I thought that the respite of air-conditioning would make it okay. While on the bus, the tour guide appeared knowledgeable and provided a lot of information about the sites that we passed. Unfortunately, unless you were seated in the first two rows, you couldn’t hear her. The bus was loud since all of the windows were open. It was rickety and every bump caused excess noise. Therefore, it was impossible to hear anything, as there was no speaker system. The sites themselves were beautiful, and I would definitely recommend a visit. Lunch was also delicious, but did not even include water (be prepared). We had a different tour guide for Assisi, and fortunately, we were given headsets. Unfortunately, the guide walked fast and was talking about the sites without stopping. Therefore, if you were in the back of the group, you had no idea what she was talking about. I went on 8 tours during my visit, and this was the worse one, although I loved the towns and the scenic drive!
Response from Host, Jul 2023
