What To Expect

Your tour starts with meeting your guide at the Fontana del Tritone in Piazza Barberini. Then, follow your guide to the Museum and Crypt of Capuchins, steps from the piazza.

Head inside, don your audio guide headsets and explore the Bone Chapel, adorned with the bones of 4,000 Capuchin monks, and the Christian Catacombs, where early Christians practiced their faith.

Board an air-conditioned bus and head to the Catacombs of Domitilla, an underground Christian cemetery. See the frescoes, unusual iconography, burial places, and places of worship while your historian guide provides context.

Seeing the catacombs were great and interesting. The tour guide himself was knowledgeable but just a little too fast. Things felt a little rush and he was a little bit of a fast walker which the older people had a hard time keeping up. Besides those minor things everything was well.

The tour is wonderful! You get a deep dive into some rich history of the past and see what I would call “hauntingly beautiful” designs made out of bone. I had Alan and he was amazing! He cracked jokes the whole time and he was very knowledgeable.

This tour was a lot of fun and very informative. I have visited the catacombs in Paris, Prague, London & Moscow….. and this is my first time visiting the catacombs in Rome! What a great and amazing experience and I look forward to returning and trying to visit other catacomb locations in the city.

Emiliano was a great guide! He gave us so much insight to all three sites, but also to several monuments we walked past. Definitely a good walk, wear comfortable shoes and clothes. But so worth it!

Good and informative tour guides, however the tour was far more religious than expected and we spent more time at public churches than exploring the catacombs. I’d give this a miss if you’re short on time in Rome.

We didn't know in detail what to expect with this tour and it was the most expensive one that we did. We were glad we went on it. The tour guides talked A LOT and probably gave us too much information, they were extremely knowledgeable and passionate about their subject and Rome in general. It would have been helpful to have a clear overview from the guides at the beginning about what the whole tour included and how it all worked together in the time period allotted. Sometimes the tour guides would pose a question and then either not answer it or answer it 10 minutes later, many tangents were pursued which sometimes made it all hard to follow. The catacombs were probably the best bit and also the capuchin ossuary which was interesting but bizarre. I booked this tour because we had our 17 year old son with us and thought he'd be keen on something creepy but he found it too much information (you could easily market this tour for families with teenagers by the way and change the whole style of tour). Anyway, we really enjoyed it so thank you, the tour guides worked very hard indeed and tried to please everyone and the transport was very efficiently arranged.

A good overall trip

Pleasantly surprised. We have read mixed reviews on Viator tours so we didn’t know what to expect. The trip was a tad rushed and the group very large- text had said a minivan but it was a full coach. Catacombs could have been more time spent as it was more marching down the corridors. Overall price point was good given the location of the catacombs and how much a taxi would have cost to there, and the Basillica at the end was a nice suprise- we have walked past it a million times and never realised what was inside. As expected the Bone church was amazing.
