What To Expect

You're transferred from your accommodation in Rotorua after a personalized meet-and-greet and photo op with a Maori maiden dressed in traditional attire. Then learn some basic guidelines for entering the Mitai Maori Village, considered a sacred cultural and spiritual space to the Maori people.

In this bush setting of New Zealand's North Island, discover the history of the area once thriving with indigenous villages. You'll observe Maori warriors paddling a waka, or canoe, down the Wai-o-whiro stream, and visit the Fairy Spring for a look at freshwater eels, trout, and glowworms.

The evening's cultural entertainment includes a performance of games, songs, and dances including the haka, or war dance. Learn about Maori customs, including the art of ta moko (tattoo), woodcarving, and medicinal uses of native plants.

Savor a selection of succulent dishes during a traditional hangi feast, with foods cooked underground in an earthen oven. Your dinner includes New Zealand meats and poultry along with vegetables and fresh salads. Top off your meal with buffet-style desserts. Drinks are available for purchase from the full bar.

Afterward, you're dropped off at your hotel.

Super showcase of Māori culture
Eileen_G, Apr 2024
This popular event was well organised despite there being a lot of people there. The food was good and plentiful . You have to buy drinks other than water . Our host was very friendly , informative and amusing . Learnt a lot about the Māori culture. We enjoyed the Māori performances . Walking to see the glow worms was also lovely . Overall a very nice evening
Mitai - experience to remember.

My 2 guests from Europe were both amazed with Hangi and the presentation . The only thing that limits to full surprise was the glow worm .. not too much was seen .but over all it was a good experience and learnings .
Exactly as is described!

This felt like a very authentic experience. The food was delicious and plentiful. We liked learning about the culture and seeing how it is cooked in the ground. The dinner is served buffet style and you are welcome to go back for seconds. We shared a table with others and enjoyed speaking with other tourists. The singing, dancing and attire of the Mitai people were truly enjoyable. It was nice that they explained things in English as they went along. They provide a shuttle to pick you up and drop you off at your hotel, which makes it very convenient. I would definitely recommend this experience!
A must in Rotorua

If you are coming to this part of the world, you really should know, about the indigenous people to the area. This was a good representation of that and the food was surprisingly better than I imagined and plenty of it. Excellent deal.
This is a must do, we were pleasantly surprised at how good it was.

Great night for all the family
Nicola_O, Apr 2024
We don't go for this kind of activity as normally touristy and expensive, however, this was an excellent evening that was both informative and entertaining. The performances were given with skill and passion, and the food was plentiful and delicious. Thank you, it was enjoyed by all the family and the 'questions' time was great fun and delivered with knowledge and pride.
Immersive culture experience
Daniel_A, Apr 2024
Lengthy exposure to native culture. Natural location was a plus. Performance was vivid and loud. Very war-centric. I prefer a shorter, less detailed narration. Food quality as expected in large buffet.
A fun dinner
Gordon_M, Apr 2024
Food was quite good, the Q&A during dinner was interesting. The host was entertaining, he had some interesting views on things.
A wonderful cultural experience

The incredible concert, the beautiful singing, the delicious food, the forest walk, the warriors in the canoe, the glowworms and the happy smiling people
Great cultural experience for the entire family.

The welcoming ceremony was very moving. The food was delicious (special shout out to the stuffing!) The walk was beautiful and calming - I felt a deep connection to nature there.
Māori culture crash course
joan_w, Apr 2024
We had the best Māori presenter take us through our 3 hour experience in the Mitai Māori village. The cultural dances, songs and hunting/war equipment were authentically presented. The hangi buffet was delicious, glow worms amazing and open question time most enlightening. A must do for first time visitors to NZ
Enjoyable experience
Taya_M, Apr 2024
Nice way to spend the evening, very knowledgable Maori tour guide and heaps of food to enjoy in the buffet. Potentially a little overpriced but I really enjoyed learning about and seeing aspects of the culture.
Great experience!
Thea_O, Apr 2024
Really enjoyed the performance on stage. That was great! Hope to come back some day soon to do it again.
Dancing and Singing was great... everything else was mid.
Nick_T, Apr 2024
The Māori dance was awesome. The endless talking before and after was annoying. The dinner was "fine"... we left before doing their glow worm thing because of the endless talking after dinner.
Great experience
Glynn_S, Apr 2024
Fantastic experience, highly recommend. There was lots explained about the culture and the food was great
Very touristy
Michelle_S, Apr 2024
The Haka warrior dance performed was the part we liked the best. For the rest it was too touristy. Food not great.
Incredible, Must-Do Experience for Any Person Visiting. Hands-Down
Michael_D, Mar 2024
Truly authentic experience that immerses you within the Maori culture. The people were so kind, generous, and made it a very welcoming experience. Very entertaining and a lovely educational piece to help you understand the depth of New Zealand heritage/culture.
