Highly recommended. The hike was awesome and we had two great guides Jesse & Hauri. Short segments of varied hike with incredible views. Wear higher socks to stop the scoria from cutting the skin around your ankles after it enters your boots on the talus slope.

Jack was an excellent guide, and the hike which was otherwise scary was fun and exciting. He was so good with each member of our group, making us feel like we were truly experiencing something very special and I felt our group really bonded. The volcano was so beautiful- but please note- windy and cold in early autumn! Wear good hiking boots!!

We really enjoyed our hike up Mount Tarawera Our guides were great fun and informative I would certainly recommend this trip for something a little different and to gain a greater understanding of the local landscape totally influenced by the volcano erupting in 1873 Especially enjoyed scree running into the crater

Cool hike however, it is weather dependent on if you will get a good view or not. I would say this is a moderate hike if you are worried about not being a hiker. For people who are afraid of heights, coming back down is a bit steep with uneven ground. Also, the ride to the mountain is very bumpy.

What an incredible experience. Our guides helped make this an experience we will never forget. We got to learn a bit about the Māori culture and just found the whole day to be very special. Great views and so much fun!

Amazing hike and views with small group. The guides were knowledgeable, drove the dirt paths like a true native, and set a good hiking pace. I would only wish they had a longer hiking option!

The transport was not what I expected, a 4X4 van with bald tyres which had to be jump started after the hike, and it arrived late. Most people on the tour were expecting a jeep or similar vehicle. My footwear was totally inadequate, I did ring the company to check what footwear was required and was assured that trainers would be sufficient, and I slipped on the scree and required assistance. I abandoned the hike as I was holding the team back on their climb. The tour was overpriced for what we received and the advertising gave a very different impression of what we would get. I did apply for and received a 75% refund which was appreciated.

Outstanding Volcano hike & cultural experience

Outstanding tour guides with Napier & Chuckie. Really enjoyed the personal touch they provided in sharing their cultural knowledge & hospitality. The volcano was spectacular & the half day walk was a very manageable trek for most fit, experienced walkers. In terms of constructive feedback, I recommend you do a bit more to set expectations on fitness levels needed for the walks. We had a few people overwhelmed by the little bit of uphill work involved & the longest downhill scree run. Also, I didn’t realize there was a full day option or I would have booked that instead! (I now have reason to return though.)

Best experience in Rotorua area. Best of our vacation so far.

Different rock types fascinating. Unexplained small granite samples suggesting geological history worth investigating. Sliding downslope in pebbles great fun. Guides showed professional standards by avoiding areas of severe wind gusts

Enjoyed the 360 degree view from the summit, as well as the experience of hiking from a high point at the rim of the crater to a low point at the bottom of the crater. Special thanks must go to our two professional guides who had taken good care of us. There’s no doubt that our New Zealand visit becomes memorable especially because of this Mount Tarawera hike.

The journey is challenging, and requires certain hiking experience which I didn’t prepare for. Fortunately, our guides Daniel and AJ are super nice and helpful looking after each one of us. We took a few breaks to rest and take photos, they waited patiently and never pushed us to carry on the journey.

Spiritual and Amazing, a hike into another land

The colors were breathtaking. A beautiful juxtaposition of lime green aside rust red. The sun made the experience warm, while the mountain top breeze kept it refreshing. Our guide, Daniel, made this a once in a lifetime experience. He was warm, personable, grounded, and knowledgable. We felt extremely connected to the land, it's history, and it's spirituality. We felt like we could have spent all day there. The hike was manageable, but required physical skill. Our tour had only 5 people in it, which really aided the personal aspects of the hike. The "run" down into the caldera was awesome! We were picked up at a nearby coffee shop, and the ride out was reasonable, although be prepared for some 4x4 wheeling to get to the start of the hike. As with all excursions in NZ, make sure you call ahead to get your pickup time and location sorted out. Could not recommend more. Thank you to Daniel for a fantastic experience!
