What To Expect

Climb aboard the USS Midway carrier in San Diego, a former naval vessel that now plays home to a fascinating range of exhibits on the American military. It’s a fascinating way to learn about military history along with an iconic piece of Americana.

Begin your USS Midway visit on downtown San Diego’s Embarcadero, boarding the ship any time during its regular hours of operation. This marvel of engineering once housed more than 4,500 crew members across its various decks, and served in the US Navy between 1945 and 1992, making it the longest-serving aircraft carrier of the 20th century. Over the years more than 225,000 sailors have walked its sturdy decks.

Once on board the ship, you have a range of options to explore. For more than a decade this famous carrier was the largest ship in the world (too large to fit through the Panama Canal, in fact), so there’s no shortage of things to do. Continue on a self-guided audio tour, told through the stories of the ship’s former officers and sailors.

Or visit some of the 65 highlighted locations throughout the vessel, covering its bridge to its engine room. There’s also 25 restored aircraft lining its deck and a range of interactive exhibits to suit visitors of all ages. You can also get a better sense for life at sea as you explore the ship’s restored living quarters, including the galleys, sleeping quarters and officer’s country.

Before you go, don’t forget to check out the flight simulator, and make sure to stop by the gift shop and café to cap off your visit.

  • For a full refund, you must cancel at least 24 hours before the experience’s start time.
  • If you cancel less than 24 hours before the experience’s start time, the amount you paid will not be refunded.
  • Any changes made less than 24 hours before the experience’s start time will not be accepted.
  • Cut-off times are based on the experience’s local time.

An experience to be enjoyed by everyone

While I am not into US history, or the military, I thought the USS Midway was set up in a way that would appeal to a wide audience. There were hands on experiences such as climbing into a plane or experiencing a virtual flight, as well as walk-throughs of the various rooms on board the air craft carrier. Warning: lots of stairs and ledges to climb over, so parts of the experience are not very mobility-friendly, but even those who have restricted mobility can still explore the main deck and the runways without hassle as there are elevators around. All in all, an enjoyable experience, and a great way to see some of the San Diego harbour.

Kids love it, rides, stories & planes . We all enjoyed the experience. We plan to go back again in the fall, we wasn't able to get it all with one visit, it's so much to experience, can't wait to visit again. I believe this stop be a yearly visit. Love it.

We started with the short film, which is a great way to start the experience. My grandson and I both really enjoyed our time on the Midway, so much I didn't know, and the planes were fun to see. We spent a couple of hours touring the Midway and could have spent more time, but it was our last day in San Deigo, and we had more sites to see. A must see when you visit.

Hardly any line, even though we bought the skip the line… but it was middle of the week. Currently doing construction above deck, so the highest points were closed. Easy to navigate below deck, many very nice volunteers working and there for history tips, etc… If you are the tiny bit queasy, I don’t recommend the simulator ride. Spent about 2 hours.
We only used 4 of the 5 tickets I purchased as an adult friend could not go .

Getting on all the planes ,and seeing them up close. I liked the gift shop.all the staff was happy to assist you . Talks on the upper deck by actual veterans. Looking back in History At how the servicemen perform their jobs . Their work equipment.

The Midway was a wonderful look back at American History. So many wonderful opportunities to get a glimpse of life on an aircraft carrier. The planes exhibited were amazing and the audio tour that accompanied shared great stories and facts.
