What To Expect

Climb aboard the USS Midway carrier in San Diego, a former naval vessel that now plays home to a fascinating range of exhibits on the American military. It’s a fascinating way to learn about military history along with an iconic piece of Americana.

Begin your USS Midway visit on downtown San Diego’s Embarcadero, boarding the ship any time during its regular hours of operation. This marvel of engineering once housed more than 4,500 crew members across its various decks, and served in the US Navy between 1945 and 1992, making it the longest-serving aircraft carrier of the 20th century. Over the years more than 225,000 sailors have walked its sturdy decks.

Once on board the ship, you have a range of options to explore. For more than a decade this famous carrier was the largest ship in the world (too large to fit through the Panama Canal, in fact), so there’s no shortage of things to do. Continue on a self-guided audio tour, told through the stories of the ship’s former officers and sailors.

Or visit some of the 65 highlighted locations throughout the vessel, covering its bridge to its engine room. There’s also 25 restored aircraft lining its deck and a range of interactive exhibits to suit visitors of all ages. You can also get a better sense for life at sea as you explore the ship’s restored living quarters, including the galleys, sleeping quarters and officer’s country.

Before you go, don’t forget to check out the flight simulator, and make sure to stop by the gift shop and café to cap off your visit.

Organization and the veterans presenting and being there was a huge plus. The friendliness of the staff was excellent. Need better parking options.

This visit exceeded my expectations. Lots to see and outstanding volunteer docents available to help build additional context. Loved the airplanes on the upper deck. Highly recommend.

I took the tour on my own and purchased my tickets throughr Viator. It was easy to access the tickets and to get on to the USS Midway.
An experience that no words can express
Yany_c, Feb 2024
An experience you should not miss! From the time you step on the ship you get a feeling that no words can express. We spent two hours looking at everything. Having the Veterans answer your questions made a huge impact. They have the audio tour free of charge. Restrooms, restaurant and shop available. Thank you for your service!
Michael_W, Feb 2024
The self guided tour with included audio is simply, excellent. Below decks, hangar level and flight deck are fabulous experiences. Whether you are a military history buff or not, this is an experience with appeal to the entire family, young or old. We are seniors and spent 3 hours here.

The ticketing system works great. Not sure that the 'skip the line' part of it is entirely accurate. So long as you can buy your ticket(s) online or otherwise {in our case Viator since I had used them before}, you will be queued in a side line for those that have tickets already. Otherwise you would line up to buy tickets. The Midway itself is an amazing piece of history. If you have a chance to really sit and listen to the volunteers speak (many of which served on the Midway) you will be rewarded. We had the good fortune of being able to listen to a 91 year old gentleman who served on the Midway and went aboard when he was 18 years old. Amazing.
The Midway voices movie,...
The Midway voices movie, the various experiences like flight simulator and sitting in the planes and helicopters.

Excellent experience on the USS Midway
Colette_R, Dec 2023
The battle at Midway Island was excellent to watch, only 15 minutes long. Loved touring the ship, brought back memories of when my Dad was in the Navy. He was an RMC - Radio Man Chief. All the volunteers were very friendly. Below deck it was very comfortable touring with all the fans and AC. Wish the lights were on with all the Christmas decorations, but you’ve got to go in the evening. lastly, just want to mention that the bathrooms were all so very clean. Kudos to the staff.
My most memorable experience on the ship
Elberdina_W, Dec 2023
The most memorable one for me was going below deck, although there where a lot of stairs it was very interesting to see that they actually had a jail there.
Great museum worth visiting in San Diego.
Rudra_G, Dec 2023
The USS Midway Museum is absolutely worth checking out if you visit San Diego. It is unlike any aircraft carrier, but one of the largest that ever operated, retired in San Diego, and converted into a museum with an amazing flight deck and exhibits related to wartime and how the aircraft carrier functioned. That too, the cost of the admission ticket on Viator was no different than that of buying an admission ticket at the museum, so it's great to buy it from this common platform.
MaryAnn_C, Dec 2023
If you're a history buff, this is a must. Even if you're not, it's a great tour of the gigantic ship.
Fun, historic, informative
Ryan_A, Nov 2023
Highly recommend for the whole family. The staff, the attractions, the planes, the tour, all top notch.
Fantastic experience
Gareth_W, Nov 2023
Great experience, helpful, informative staff, a must see if you’re in San Diego. Would highly recommend this attraction.
Gregory_D, Nov 2023
Everything I love every single part of my tour. I'm a executive chef so I also loved seeing the galley, kitchen and menus.
Even if your not into the military, this is fascinating
Catherine_M, Nov 2023
This is a fascinating tour. Great self guided audio tour that is easy to operate. Veterans give short insightful talks with videos. There are interactive experiences such as a VI ride in a fighter plane and a flight simulator. This carrier performs all the things a commercial airport does in 1/100 of the space! Plan to spend at least three hours there. I didn’t think I’d be engaged but I was thoroughly involved. Worth the cost of admission!
