What To Expect

Muir Woods National Monument is a must-see destination on any visit to the San Francisco Bay Area. Just a short drive across the Golden Gate Bridge, the protected nature reserve is home to one of the world’s last remaining coastal redwood forests.

Choose from a morning or afternoon departure. Stop at a vista point for a fantastic perspective of the Golden Gate and Alcatraz, and wind through the rolling emerald hills of the Marin Headlands to arrive at Muir Woods. Stroll along forest paths surrounded by the giant redwood trees, some of which stretch as high as 250 feet (76 meters) and date back nearly 800 years.

After Muir Woods, take a short drive to the artistic bayside village of Sausalito. Capture wonderful photos of the San Francisco skyline during a stroll along the waterfront, pop into one of the many art galleries and grab a cappuccino or ice cream at a local café (own expense).

Your tour concludes with drop off at either of the two departure points or choose the option of taking the Sausalito ferry back to San Francisco (Pier 41).

Fun day at Muir Woods and Sausalito
Susan_S, Apr 2024
Hitting the highlights of the Golden Gate Bridge, pointing out the beautiful views on the way to Muir Woods and a detour past the "Mrs. Doubt Fire" house on the way back. Driver/tour guide was super friendly.
Impressively beautiful Muir Woods
Jeanne_B, Apr 2024
Great tour on a comfortable bus with great stops at Golden Gate Bridge, Muir Woods and Sausalito. We enjoyed taking the ferry back to fisherman’s wharf. Highly recommend it!
Not as described
Daisy_H, Apr 2024
Not as described. The description states 90 minutes in Muir Woods, which is why we booked this one. Upon arriving at 9am, the driver/guide told us the bus would be leaving at 10am - so in reality we had under an hour. We were told not to go past bridge 2 by the guide, but we are relatively fit so did the bridge 3 loop and still had plenty of time for the gift shop. The guide then stood on the bus for 15 minutes talking about his childhood before we left - irritating as this could’ve been time spent in the park. The guide did not provide useful commentary, with points on the tour causing him to go off on tangents about his own life which were not at all relevant and sometimes inappropriate (swearing with a 5 year old on the bus and political commentary). Some proper history would’ve been appreciated. Muir Woods and Sausalito were both fantastic, but I wouldn’t book with this operator again.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Hi Daisy We're really sorry about the experience you shared with us. Our tour includes a 90-minute stop at Muir Woods and a 60-minute stop at Sausalito. I will contact our operations department regarding your comments to check what happened and keep you posted. Again, I am sorry, and I hope we can have the opportunity to welcome you again. Best,

bus left ahead of stated departure time. tried to contact operator and did not respond in a timely fashion. had to call viator to get a response. did not come back for us
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Hi Nayana_D I´m sorry to hear that you missed the bus, but we need to respect the departure time to get to each stop we offer on time. In this case, I can offer you a chance to reschedule your tour for another day at no cost so you can experience visiting Muir Woods and Sausalito. Please get in touch with our Customer Direct Line: 415-353-5310 for this. Thank you
It was good not great
Miguel_A, Apr 2024
The Muir Woods were spectacular. However, I am not sure about the value provided by the tour guide other than bringing us to Muir Woods. We also didn’t get to go to the Golden Gate Bridge initially, although that is in no way the tour guides fault given the protest.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Hi Miguel I appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback. I´m glad you found Muir Woods spectacular; I fully agree. It was a pitty that the Golden Gate Bridge was closed that day due to a manifestation, but we offered free ferry tickets to all our guests so they could return to San Francisco by ferry instead of having a long ride by bus. From the ferry, you have great views of the Golden Gate and Alcatraz Prison as well. Hope we can have the opportunity to welcome you again soon.
A great half day trip
Andrew_P, Apr 2024
The driver was great at describing everything and was very knowledgable. The option to return by ferry gave plenty of time to fully explore Sausalito and have a leisurely lunch. We were originally booked on the 1000 trip but moved to 0730. This change was in retrospect better than the original with a return to San Francisco by mid afternoon ferry after the mist had lifted off the bay.
Nice tour, but don't book the ferry
Jason_G, Apr 2024
Overall, the experience of travelling by tour to Muir Woods was a much more relaxing trip than renting a car, navigating there, dealing with parking, etc. However, when you travel by bus you are limited to 90 minutes in the park. That's enough time to walk down to bridge 4 and back on the Hillside trail if you are reasonably quick (if you have limited mobility, have young kids, etc., this may be too far). It gives you a good feel for the woods. Very pretty walk, and some amazing views of large redwoods. We were annoyed after realizing that when you book the return ferry from Sausalito via this tour, you are paying 2-3x as much as you would if you just pay when you get there or use a Clipper card. Seems like the company is just taking an unfair advantage of unsuspecting tourists.
Great tour
Rachel_D, Apr 2024
Really great stops on this trip that otherwise would have been difficult to get to. The tour guide did seem bored though when reciting all the facts, and that's exactly what it sounded like - a well rehearsed recital.
relaxing and beautiful way to spend a half day in the San Fran area
Paula_O, Apr 2024
Our driver was knowledgeable and gave us a lot of information. The woods were a beautiful and peaceful walk.

Ian_B, Apr 2024
Muir Woods was truly beautiful. It was wonderful to just amble around amongst trees that are hundreds of years old. It was very peaceful and tranquil. I only wish I could have stayed longer. Sausalito was also a lovely place to visit.
Not worth it
Estelle_P, Apr 2024
The bus was 30 minutes late to pick up. The two stops - over the bridge and Muir Forest then felt rushed. I know there’s only 90 minutes there. Very touristy. Happy I took the ferry back from Sausalito.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Hi Estelle Thank you for sharing your experience! We wish our guests could spend more time in Muir Woods but this national park has a limit of 90 minutes so that as many people as possible can enjoy the impressive Coastal Redwood trees. Returning by ferry is the best option, as you can stay as long as you want in Sausalito and enjoy the views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz from the ferry. Best,
Great forests and picturesque bayside village
Duncan_C, Apr 2024
A beautiful area to visit and enjoy the forest. If you want to walk a bit further you will have to be organised and be able to walk at a reasonable pace. Sausalito is wonderful and as we caught the ferry back we had lots of time to walk right along the waterfront and enjoy several drinks at a few bars abc and a great lunch.
A stress-free trip - beautiful redwoods!
Alexandrea_B, Apr 2024
The driver, George, was fantastic! It was much less stressful to get to the Muir Woods by bus given the limited parking there and windy roads on the way. The only thing I wish I’d known was that the half day tour took much closer to what I would call a full day. I was picked up in Union Square at 10:40am and didn’t get back to the drop-off point until about 4pm, when many other attractions like museums are closed or about to close.
Perfect day tour
Mackenzie_W, Apr 2024
Excellent tour- great guide on the bus, pls ty of time to explore Muir Woods and Sausalito. Would book again
Great trip, hazardous driver.
Jay_M, Apr 2024
The actual places were wonderful. The driver was driving and doing the talking at the same time. His hands were off the wheel at times. The tight curves and steep hills are a hazard and require different people doing both jobs. Sights were wonderful.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Hello Jay First of all, thank you so much for sharing your feedback with us. I'm glad you found the places wonderful. Regarding driver performance, I would like to mention that all our drivers are professional and were trained extensively to drive this tour. They go to the park daily, and they know the way perfectly. Even so, I will talk to our Operation Manager about your comments and see what we should improve. Thank you
Enjoyable and educational
Andrea_S, Apr 2024
Muir Woods was beautiful and well worth the time. Knowledgeable driver. Great weather Sausalito is a charming city
The bus driver was not...
Wendy_V, Apr 2024
The bus driver was not good, the time in Sausalito si to short. In general don’t like to expensive for the time we can spend in each lave
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Hi Wendy. Thank you for sharing your experience! We offer the option to return by ferry from Sausalito, so you can spend as long as you want there. Some passengers prefer to return to San Francisco and spend the afternoon there, so the return by bus is perfect for them. If you prefer to stay longer in Sausalito, the return by ferry option is the best. I hope we can have the opportunity to welcome you again soon.
Fun, but communication could have been better.
Amy_K, Apr 2024
The trip was fun and the woods were really incredible. It was pretty hard to hear the guide on the bus, so we missed most of what was said. I wish we had been given a specific itinerary for each stage of the trip, as we really had no idea when we were supposed to be where. My kids really wanted to ride the ferry and it made it really difficult to figure out which get we should try to be on. But overall, it was a fun trip, and I would do it again.
Relaxed two-stop tour
Helen_S, Apr 2024
The tour took us across the Golden Gate bridge in an air-conditioned coach and through the countryside to Muir Woods National Monument. Stops at Muir Woods are restricted to 90 minutes but in that time we were able to walk the 2 mile trail (boardwalks and asphalt) and stop for a sandwich at the visitor centre. Trails range from 1/2 mile to more adventurous hikes. On the way back we stopped at Sausalito. As we had opted to return to San Francisco by bus, we only had an hour to explore, but there are options to return by ferry if you prefer to have a late lunch in Sausalito. Our driver was happy to accommodate those who decided to change their mind and opt for the ferry return instead. Sausilito is a picturesque town with lovely waterfronts, restaurants and shops. We stopped for drinks at the Barrel House Tavern, which also has a great looking menu that we would definitely have tried if we hadn't already have eaten at Muir Woods. This relaxed two-stop tour rounded off a memorable stay in San Francisco.
