Dear Luz,
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and concerns about the trip with us. We always aim to provide an authentic and positive experience with our guests. We are glad that you enjoyed parts of the trip and we will forward your review to our guides but sorry to hear that not all parts of the trip were enjoyable and honestly this is not the first time for us to hear about guests’ concerns regarding the welfare of the camels and we would like to take the time to respond.
Please keep in mind that all trips which take place in Sharm El Sheikh in the Sinai Desert are a cooperation between the individual tour company and the indigenous nomadic Bedouin people. This cooperation is regulated by the government to boost the economy of the Bedouin tribe and work for its people. Camels and tent space for the dinner are only rented by us and the activities are handled by local Bedouin people. We try our best to ensure the best standards, but we must also respect the local Bedouin customs and traditions.
We understand that for our guests, it may seem that the camels are treated harshly and suffer. However, camels are very tough animals with a wilful disposition and are not fully domesticated like other animals, such as horses or donkeys and so it is necessary for the camels’ handlers to give the camels instructions in ways that the camel can follow otherwise, they may not be able to stop a 500kg camel reacting in such a way as to put a guest in a dangerous situation, such as the camel standing up before the guest is safely sitting on it.
Furthermore, a muzzle and reigns are used again to control the animal for the guests’ safety before and during the ride. The camel may bite you. The animal doesn’t become distressed or injured while wearing the safety equipment.
We have frequently communicated our guests concerns to the handlers; however it still needs improvement. We want to promote understanding between our guests and the Bedouin people and to support the local economy in Sinai and hope that continuing tourism to the area will boost the economy and improve standards.
Kind regards,
L.Keating
