Yummy Food, Interesting History!
Camille_S, May 2024
We had a great tour with Jim! Loved hearing about the history of the U Street Neighborhood. Delicious food. Large servings so bring an appetite!
The guide was fabulous,...
Peggy_S, Apr 2024
The guide was fabulous, and the history was outstanding. The food was so-so - 4 stops with one being a regular ice cream store. Interesting foods, but not always tasty.
Great food, great people, fun times.
Andy_H, Mar 2024
1. Great food. Half-smokes were my favorite. My wife leaned towards the pastelitos. 2. Excellent tour guide in Rasheed - he was highly knowledgeable and shared a ton of local history and personal experiences with us. 3. Very cool area to walk around and learn about the food and culture. Overall great tour - THANKS!
Response from Host, Mar 2024

More than we expected

Loved the story telling and the deep learning every step of the way. Not only did we get the opportunity to taste the culture we were learning about but we truly felt like we walked away with more knowledge than we signed up for

Great Tour from Houston, Texas!!!
Angela_P, Mar 2024
The food tour with Blue Fern Travel was amazing! My boyfriend and I were extremely pleased with our tour guide Jim’s knowledge of the community, his personal stories about experiences he’d had in the U Street Corridor, as well as his desire to ensure we had a fantastic experience. We visited four selectively chosen spots that did not disappoint. This tour was certainly a focus on Quality vs Quantity; and my boyfriend and I were not disappointed. Our favorite stop was an Ethiopian cafe that is sure to please all. It was our first Ethiopian dining experience, even though we live in Houston, Texas and can easily access Ethiopian cuisine. The presentation of the food, cleanliness of the cafe, and eclectic spices used in the dish made our experience one to remember. You too will enjoy it. Ben’s Chili Bowl, and Colada were also superb. However, our last stop was Jeni’s Ice Cream, and it was the perfect finish. This ice cream was served in a warm waffle cone and made every bite worth the time we plan to spend in the gym working it off! Absolutely fantastic tour! We recommend this tour with Blue Fern Travel. You will enjoy it!
Response from Host, Mar 2024
Wow, thank you so much for your incredible review! It fills us with excitement and joy to hear that you and your boyfriend had an amazing time on our food tour with Jim. We're thrilled that Jim's knowledge, personal stories, and dedication to ensuring a fantastic experience resonated with you both. It's fantastic to know that our focus on quality over quantity left a lasting impression, and we're delighted that you enjoyed each carefully chosen spot, especially the Ethiopian cafe. Your description of the presentation, cleanliness, and flavors of the food truly warms our hearts. And what a delightful way to end the tour with Jeni's Ice Cream! We're honored by your recommendation and can't wait to welcome you back for more unforgettable experiences. Thank you again for choosing Blue Fern Travel!
Pretty good
JOy_B, Jan 2024
The tour is a little light. Would enjoy *more* info about neighborhood history, what was going on in the U.S. in general at that time, additional mural visits (I think we visited 2), just more in depth info. Guide was nice and fun, however. We did 4 food stops. First two are neighborhood establishments (savory). Second two (dessert) seemed to be chains? Disappointed compared to other foodie tours we've taken, but we would still recommend to friends.
Response from Host, Mar 2024
Hi Joy, we're glad that you would recommend our U Street tour to friends; it means so much when people are happy to refer us! As we are committed to sharing the history of our DC neighborhoods through food, I'm sorry that you felt it was a bit light...I guess that means we set proper expectations as we often hear that people are surprised by how much history they learn. All of our restaurant partners are locally owned; a couple of them do have multiple locations within DC - and we are proud of them for that! It speaks to their success and to their impactful place within the story of our city. Thank you for joining us; we appreciate the time you took to write this review!
Not a good value
Linda_C, Nov 2023
The black history of the region was very interesting. It was a vibrant community with the blacks helping blacks. Then the riots happened and ruined a good community. We felt like it wasn’t a good value because the food did not justify the high cost. I understand the Ben’s is historical but half smoked dog, bottled water and a bag of chips wasn’t that good. Ethiopian Food and Cuban pastries were thoroughly enjoyed by all. The ice cream was ice cream , not really historical or ethnic.
Response from Host, Mar 2024
Dear Linda, Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the historical aspect of the tour. We're glad the knowledge about the neighborhood resonated with you. Our value comes not just from the actual tastings, but also in this curated content that you enjoyed; additionally, it is our mission to support our local business by paying full price and tipping our servers at each restaurant partner, and providing a donation from each ticket sale to our charity partner, Bread for the City. Each donation feeds a DC resident in need three full meals. Your participation in our tour played a significant role in giving back to our community, and for that, we sincerely thank you.
A U street experience
Carol_T, Oct 2023
The information and food experiences of the local community was very good. Telling the truth is important. It was nice to be in a small group with others interested in African American people and their communities.

The good parts:...
Marc_Y, Oct 2023
The good parts: enthusiastic guide, several fascinating historical sites still in operation, we joined the tour of an in-uniform Civil War soldier who was VERY informative and engaging. Less good: a lot of walking without any context, not a well-focused talk, and there should have been small samples (there was too much food) at the food establishments which would have allowed for quicker time in the restaurants and the tour could have then been shorter. Maybe lunch at Ben’s could have been an hour into the tour, rather than right at the beginning.
Response from Host, Mar 2024
Thank you for joining us and for taking the time to write this review. We appreciate your positive remarks about our enthusiastic guide and the engaging historical sites. I'm sorry that you felt that there was too much walking without context - that is not our goal. We aim to share stories throughout the experience and we often hear that people are surprised by how much they learned. Our food tour features fewer stops with more substantial food. We know that other food tour operators have a slightly different model regarding tastings and ours is to provide plenty to satiate - it's a food tour after all! :)
Rasheed is amazing!
Anna_B, Oct 2023
Rasheed was a engaging, lively host. Warm, welcoming, personable and funny. Good humoured and knowledgeable. We loved the food and could've gone on all day.
Response from Host, Oct 2023
Hi Anna, Thank you for your kind words. It was a pleasure hosting you, and I'm glad you enjoyed the experience. I could have kept on going too! Your feedback means a lot to me, and I appreciate your warm and encouraging comments. I hope to have the opportunity to host you again in the future.
Great walk through history and a full belly
Karen_L, Sep 2023
A great walk around this area, rich in history, with our knowledgeable guide! The half smoke at Ben’s, the Ethiopian food, the Cuban pastries and ice cream were all fantastic! Do not eat before, plenty of food!
Response from Host, Sep 2023
Hi Karen! Thank you for the 5 stars!!! We are so happy you had a great time on tour with us. We are glad you left pleasantly full!
Disappointing and expensive
Julie_D, Sep 2023
This tour was disappointing. The tour had very little to do about food. The agenda was focused on the guide's beliefs about her culture more than an enjoyable learning experience about food culture. It was an expensive few hours that should have been fun.
Response from Host, Sep 2023

Get off the monument path and visit U Street!
Chris_R, Sep 2023
The U Street Food and Street Art Tour was the trip of a lifetime! U Street, known as Black Broadway, has a rich cultural heritage unknown to most Americans. Many of America’s beloved musical and stage personalities got their start on U Street. Sampling the food of different countries was amazing! Even more AMAZING was learning history through foods. Our guide was personable, and passionate about sharing the history of U Street. She knew her stuff! If you are in DC, get off the beaten monument path, and travel to U Street! Well worth the price of admission! Two thumbs up!👍🏻 👍🏻
Response from Host, Sep 2023

OVERALL A GOOD TOUR
Charles_K, Sep 2023
The overall experience was enjoyable. The food was decent-I’ve been on foodie tours in other cities and we got smaller tastes at many more locations, which gives you a wider exposure to different foods. Our guide was interesting and very helpful.
Response from Host, Sep 2023
Hi Charles Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts about your recent experience with Blue Fern Travel. We truly appreciate your feedback and are thrilled to hear that you found the overall experience enjoyable. We understand your perspective regarding the size of food tastings, and we appreciate your input on this matter. We continuously strive to strike the right balance between providing substantial tastings and delivering a meaningful narrative that connects you to the community. Thank you once again for choosing Blue Fern Travel
Educational
Kristine_K, Sep 2023
The soldiers wall and the history behind it. Learning about the 4 Ls. The food was very good I loved the Cuban food. I think soul food would have been a better choice going forward.

U Street food tour- Amazing!
Victoria_B, Jun 2023
We loved the food at each stop on the tour and hearing about the local history. My partner said the chili dog at Ben’s is the best he’s ever had!
Response from Host, Jul 2023
We love hearing guest feedback about our tastings, so thank you for confirming what we at Blue Fern Travel already believe about the half-smoke at Ben's Chili Bowl - nothing tops it. Thank you for your review, Victoria!
Highly recommend U Street Tour!!
Sue_E, Jun 2023
Fantastic afternoon exploring and learning about U Street from the Civil war era to today with our fun and knowledgeable tour guide Soneka. Loved every one of the tastings which were generous and satisfying, but not overwhelming. We are avid walking food tour fans for exploring cities around the world. U Street was one of our favorites. We live nearby in MD and can’t wait to do it again when bringing future guests to DC
