Manaus trip ideas
The city of Manaus lies at the confluence of two major rivers, so although it's quite a distance from the Brazilian coast, it still has a host of beach spots popular with locals and tourists alike. Arguably the most popular of these beach destinations is the Ponta Negra Beach. This stretch of sand features a playground for kids, cycling paths, and sand volleyball courts, as well as large amphitheater for live performances. Some tours into the Brazilian jungle pass by the beach, but few actually stop there.
You can get to Ponta Negra beach from downtown Manaus by bus or taxi (keep in mind it's not a short cab ride, so if you're on a strict budget take the bus, or find some friends to share the cost of a taxi trip).
The beach is open for swimming until 5pm daily, but the neighborhood ranks among the buzziest for nightlife in Manaus. The avenue in front of the beach is closed to cars on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings. Plan to visit early in the day, as thunderstorms are more common in the afternoon.
Travelers to Manaus planning a day at the beach have a few options to choose from, besides, Ponta Negra. Praia da Lua is known for its fine white sand and beach shacks serving beer and fish, while Praia do Tupe has calm waters, perfect for kids. It’s also popular with locals, particularly on weekends.
