The Basics
About 66,000 gallons (250,000 liters) of water per second flow over Huka Falls as the Waikato River dramatically narrows from nearly 328 feet (100 meters) to just 29 feet (15 meters). You can walk or mountain bike along the river and watch the churning water from various viewing platforms. Adventure lovers can flight-see in a helicopter or ride a jet boat up the river, right to where the water cascades over the edge of the falls.
Private and group tours visit Huka Falls, departing from both Taupo and Auckland. Day trips and multi-day excursions may also visit Waitomo Caves, Pohutu Geyser, and Te Puia, the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute.

Things to Know Before You Go
Huka Falls are ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, nature lovers, and photographers.
Wear comfy, rugged footwear and tote a camera to capture images of the scenic falls.
Wear sunblock in the summer and warm clothes in the winter.
If you take the jet boat, book in advance and bring a change of clothes—just in case.
How to Get There
The falls are in the Wairakei Tourist Park, a 5-minute drive north of central Taupo. You can also walk or bike there from Spa Thermal Park, which takes about 45 minutes.
When to Get There
Huka Falls are most spectacular after heavy rainfall or when the Waikato River is flooding. While suitable for all seasons, spring or summer usually make for better outdoor conditions.
Hukafalls Jet Boating
If you’re a thrill seeker, a Hukafalls jet boat ride offers a unique Waikato River experience. Several operators offer whitewater guided jet boat tours, usually involving a ride right up to the base of the falls. Often custom made and built in New Zealand, the jet boats are highly maneuverable, reliable, and safe. Lifejackets are always provided.
