Ballarat trip ideas
Make sure you’re in the mood for medieval madness when you arrive at Kryal Castle. Throughout the day, you’ll watch performances in the arena and participate in archery, ax-throwing, swordplay, and much more. There are interactive sessions for kids, plus some lovely gardens to wander through. Besides general admission, several events are held at the castle, like the VIC Medieval Festival, music concerts, murder mysteries, horse festivals, and more. Schools take students here for interactive lessons, too.
Day passes and yearly passes are on offer for adults, children, and families, so choose the one that will be of the best value for you and your group.
Medieval-themed accommodation is also available, so if you’d like to experience a night at the castle and extend your adventure, book in advance. Note that the accommodation is available even if the theme park is closed.
Check out the Royal Family Package, where your family will be accompanied all day by your very own Jester guide.
Look online to see what performances are happening that day if you want to plan your day ahead.
Kryal Castle is 15 minutes from Ballarat, so renting a car or booking a ride share to get to the castle and around the area are great options. Ballarat is a direct 1.5-hour train ride from Melbourne, where many tourists head out from. It’s easy to grab an Uber or taxi from the train station out to the castle.
Plan to visit Kryal castle on the weekend or any day during the Victorian school holidays from 10am to 4pm. Plenty of festivals and events are held on the castle grounds throughout the year, so check out the website or social media sites to see what’s happening around the time you plan to visit. Note that the castle is always closed on Christmas.
To watch one of Australia's only continuous jousting events, head out to Kryal Castle. You’ll see a medieval event where knights ride horses—lances at the ready—to put on a show for the crowd. This happens daily at 2pm, so come early to book your seats and be ready to step back in time.
