3 Days in Anaheim & Buena Park for Foodies

Curated by Elisa Parhada travel writer and food fan living in Los Angeles.

It took a few years of being in Los Angeles to see Anaheim as anything more than Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm. But Orange County is a goldmine for hidden strip mall restaurants, ethnic eateries, and quirky food finds—not to mention its nearby beautiful beaches, world-class museums, and a plethora of hometown sports teams. Some food favorites include the Anaheim Packing District food hall, Strong Water Anaheim tiki lounge, Little Saigon Vietnamese restaurant, and Afters Ice Cream. Disneyland also has some seriously great food options, so do your research. Dole Whip, anyone?

Here's how to eat well with three days in Anaheim.

If you only have time for one thing, make it Disneyland, an Anaheim classic.

Anaheim has reliably sunny weather, but expect cooler mornings and evenings that may require a lightweight jacket.

Day 1

Walt Disney is known for paying attention to details, which is why Disneyland calls itself the happiest place on earth. The food scene is no different. From the impressive tiki ambiance of the Enchanted Tiki Room to the epic Monte Cristo sandwich at the Blue Bayou Restaurant, taste your way through the park.

Another theme park option today is Knott’s Berry Farm, which was practically founded on food. The fried chicken dinner with handmade biscuits and boysenberry pie has been a classic since 1934.

Day 2

SoCal’s Napa Valley is in nearby in Temecula, where more than two dozen grape varieties thrive. Callaway Vineyard and Wilson Creek Winery are two favorites. Olive oil is another beloved artisanal product from the area, so keep an eye out for it.

Non-drinkers may want to catch a whale-watching trip from Dana Point and explore the history of an old Spanish mission surrounded by a wide range of quaint eateries and taquerias. A favorite is Ramos House Cafe on historic Los Rios Street. If you don't have a car, take a direct Amtrak train from Anaheim to downtown San Juan Capistrano.

Day 3

In summer, Balboa Island is the quintessential boardwalk and fun zone destination. It's 25 miles or 40 kilometers south in Newport Beach. After browsing the museums, stores, and beach cottages, get out on the water on an electric Duffy boat for views from the water. Don't forget to sample the frozen bananas and Balboa bars.

After the fun, frenetic pace at Balboa, relax on the Newport Beach shores with a catered Vietnamese picnic. Nearby, Westminster is an important center for the Vietnamese community, full of authentic Vietnamese eateries and tofu factories, including Dong Phuong Tofu.
