3 Days in Clearwater for Foodies

Curated by Nick Dauka travel writer and Central Florida native.

People visit Clearwater for the beach—and who could blame them? It’s one of the most lauded beaches in the state, thanks to its soft white sand and spectacular sunsets. For foodies, though, Clearwater means having access to fantastically fresh seafood. Discerning diners will love the range of options stretching from upscale innovative cuisine to greasy-spoon seafood shacks.

And what’s more, you can enjoy so many of these dishes right from the topside of a sailboat. So pack your appetite, a bib, and a bottle of vinegar for a salty sampling of Clearwater Beach that you’ll salivate over.

Dine oceanside to take advantage of the Gulf breeze’s relief from heat and humidity in summer.

If you only have time for one thing, make it Island Way Grill for sushi, Sunday brunch, or both.

Day 1

Head for the spot Clearwater is known for—the beach. The gulf waters and soft sand is a year-round draw, but don’t feel pressured to stack your day with activities. Clearwater is a laid-back city, and simply strolling the beach sampling food from the restaurants you pass can fill the day. Consider doing so with a self-guided beach bar crawl.

After a boozy beach walk, you’re due for sustenance to keep you on an even keel. Take a break while gorging yourself on grub during a buffet lunch, or opt for a dinner cruise to view the sunset from the water.

Day 2

On day two, hire a cab and head a few miles north of Clearwater to the town of Tarpon Springs. There, locals call upon their Greek-American heritage to serve up goodies such as loukoumades, a treat of fried dough. Private bike tours offer one way to explore the town while working up an appetite.

Before you ask your cabbie to take you back to Clearwater, consider a mid-way pitstop in Dunedin. Join a group of fellow foodies on a walking tour of the city to sample everything from cider to sweets to seafood, as well as cocktails and locally distilled spirits.

Day 3

With only a day remaining, give in to the temptation to spend hours by the beach. When your stomach starts rumbling, splurge on more than just a sandwich. Hop aboard a yacht and cruise the waves listening to live music while dining on a 3-course lunch.

It’s not a proper vacation until you’ve purchased a souvenir, so use the last few hours of your afternoon to sample one of the few wines local to Florida. Each tasting at Aspirations Winery includes a take-home bottle of your choice.
