3 Days in Crystal River for Foodies

Curated by Nick Dauka travel writer and longtime Central Florida resident.

It should come as no surprise that Crystal River cuisine is seafood-based. With rivers, natural springs, and the Gulf of Mexico all acting as the local seafood market, you’ll have your fill of fish, fritters, and more. Fried, boiled, or raw—however you like your salty bites prepared—you’ll find tons of mom-and-pop spots to dive into great eats. While you’re here, don’t miss an abundance of home-cooked goodies and Southern-style bites. Three days in Crystal River is enough to fill your plate, and your stomach, with the best dishes that this area has to offer.

Chilly nights in winter are the only time you’ll need a jacket.

If you only have time for one thing, make it swimming with the manatees.

Day 1

Day one in Crystal River is reserved for the most popular activity: meeting the manatees. Fuel up at The Biscuit Barn for breakfast then jump on a manatee viewing cruise.

Since the tour ends at Pete’s Pier, head over to The Crab Plant nearby for fresh crab and fish. After a great seafood lunch, take the rest of the day in literal stride while paddling on a self-guided kayak tour.

Day 2

On day two, you’ll need to work for your food. Wake up early and get out on the water for a private fishing charter. Sheepshead, cobia, trout, and gag grouper are just a few of the fish you’ll target in the Crystal River.

This next activity involves getting in the water to get your hungry hands on grub. Swap the private fishing charter for a scalloping vessel. After a lesson, you’ll dive into the water and scoop your very own scallops.

Day 3

Don’t feel bad about sleeping in on your last day. You’ll have plenty of fun to fill your remaining hours. Start with brunch or lunch at Dan’s Clam Stand (for clams, of course) or a sizable seafood platter at Peck’s Old Port Cove before going for a swim with the manatees.

Still have some leftovers from lunch? Bring them and your favorite beverage on board for a sunset cruise. Enjoy stunning views from Kings Bay as you reflect on this memorable vacation.
