3 Days in Limassol for Foodies

Curated by Margot Biggwho loves a good Cypriot mezze.

Cyprus is one of my favorite places on earth. The weather is fantastic (especially if you’re like me and thrive off sunshine), the landscapes are pretty, there’s ancient history everywhere, and people are—by and large—warm and hospitable. Cyprus also has all sorts of fantastic food, and much of it has similarities with the cuisine of Greece, including some excellent wine.

Follow this food-centric itinerary in and around the historic seaside city of Limassol to taste the best of what this island country has to offer.

Don’t forget sun protection—even on cooler days, the sun in Limassol can be powerful.

If you only have time for one thing, make it a mezze meal at a traditional taverna.

Day 1

Spend your first day checking out the dining scene in Limassol. Start with a morning visit to the Psarokaika Fish Market—it's a great place to pick up freshly caught seafood if you have a kitchen or get a feel for what's available in town. For lunch, try cooking Cypriot barbecue in a private cooking class.

Work off your meal with a private, customizable walking tour of the city—and ask your guide to show you some of the best places to eat.

Day 2

On your second day, get away from the urban crowds with a visit to the Troodos Mountains, either by renting a car or hopping on a tour. This inland region is a great place to sample and buy olive oil, halloumi, and all sorts of traditional sweets. Make sure to stop at one of the many tavernas in the region for a traditional lunch.

In the afternoon, check out some of the region’s many local wineries. If you plan to do any tasting, leaving the driving to someone else is wise.

Day 3

No trip to Cyprus would be complete without some time spent at sea. On your final day, set sail for a day of adventure in the Mediterranean—and opt for a catamaran cruise with a buffet lunch.

Make your final evening a romantic one on a romance-themed tour, followed by a traditional mezze dinner in a local taverna. The atmospheric Dionysus Mansion is a particularly beloved choice.
