3 Days in Zagreb for Families

Curated by Jenna Scatenawho thinks Zagreb is the perfect family reunion destination.

Most family holidays in Croatia are likely centered around Hvar, Split, and Dubrovnik on the stunning coast. But if you find yourself drawn inland, Zagreb offers a different side to your trip. While the capital city is dominated by grand old buildings, history museums, and art galleries, I’m here to convince you that there are plenty of fun things to do for kids, too. From the city zoo to local markets and hands-on exhibitions at unique museums, your days won’t be boring. This three-day itinerary will help you and your kids see the best of the city.

If you only have time for one thing, make it the Museum of Illusions.

Light rainfall is always possible; pack an umbrella just in case.

Day 1

Day one in Zagreb, get your kids familiar with the new surroundings. See landmarks including the Nikola Tesla Statue, Croatian National Theatre, Croatian State Archives, the Sava River, and Upper and Lower Town—getting some exercise as you discover the city on a bike tour.

Later, when your kids get peckish, take a walking food tour to sample delicious local food and keep them interested in the new culture with a trip to the bustling Dolac Market. Pro tip: Bring cash! In the evening, check out Tkalčićeva, a pedestrianized area dotted with cafes, bars, and restaurants where live music takes place.

Day 2

On your second day, venture further afield. Take a tour of the stunning nearby Plitvice Lakes. Kids can learn Croatian history at Rastoke, a beautiful watermill village with a fairytale feel, en route to the Lakes. Enjoy waterfalls and streams at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, walking along the paths and boardwalks.

Return to Zagreb and enjoy a ride in the funicular to the Upper Town, with dinner near St. Catherine's Square. If there's energy left over, take a tour with a local guide who'll walk you through the most scenic parts of the city on a personalized private tour.

Day 3

On day three, enjoy the best art and culture in Zagreb. Begin with a trip to the Museum of Illusions, with holograms and moving art. Afterward, head to the Museum of Contemporary Art for interactive installations and a long slide that's a crowd-pleaser. Next, take advantage of the best light to take a city photo tour.

agreb has a strong street art scene. Take a tour with a local artist to see hidden parts of the city and learn the stories behind the graffiti movement. Watch the gas lanterns being lit by hand at dusk in the Upper Town for some last-minute Zagreb magic everyone will enjoy.
