Beautiful and informative tour!

If you're making a stop in Coimbra, I highly recommend this tour! We learned so much about the University as well as Portuguese government, architecture, literature and culture during this tour. Our tour guide (Renan) was the MOST enthusiastic history buff I have ever encountered. He had us laughing often and left us with many memorable facts. The library is 100% worth it, but note that you cannot take any pictures while inside. The tour was the perfect length; we were excited to explore the rest of Coimbra by the time the tour wrapped up. Make sure to bring your own water!

Our tour guide was excellent. He was very personable and knowledgeable. He spoke very good English. He was a student of the university and was getting a history major. The meeting point was easy to get to and the tour started on time. There was 6 in our group - which was a nice size. The tour of the university was interesting and it was definitely worth seeing.

Renan was GREAT!!!! We visited Coimbra on a rainy and overcast day but he was undeterred! So much energy and passion. He really brought the history of Portugal and the University alive. The best historical tour guide I've ever had. This is the tour I wished I started my entire trip with- I learned so much! I recommend this tour to anyone visiting Portugal. And particularly Renan. He was absolutely excellent!!!!!

Renan was wonderful! I had a solo tour in the morning so I had his full attention. He knows his subject matter and his interest and passion comes through. Even for me- someone who hates history classes in the 50s as we were taught to memorize names and places - he made it so interesting! Pointing out little known people and facts.

Learned so much from our guide who was local, and graduated from the University. The University of Coimbra was established in 1290 and its purpose was to develop and establish the Portuguese culture. Simply amazing.

As for the locale, if you like to visit university campuses, Coimbra is well worth the visit due to its long history illustrated everywhere with portraits and statuary.
