We had a fantastic time kayaking with our guide Ollie. He sets you up on the important parts of sea kayaking before you head out. The area is gorgeous and amazingly beautiful. Ollie explained to us sights and what to look for. We spent some time on the beach at Cathedral Cove enjoying the beach and the sights. Plus Ollie is quite the beach barista! Overall I highly recommend this tour.

The cherry on top of our NZ honeymoon

We had an amazing time with Brad leading our group. Instead of seals, at his suggestion group elected to go out into open water looking for dolphins and found them by the dozens. It was a spectacular experience and I’d recommend it to anyone.

      Limited wildlife but still worthwhile

Super friendly staff, beautiful scenery, only issue is that we hardly saw any wildlife! Our tour was split into three groups with a guide in each, travelling in slightly different directions. Our group saw a total of two seals from a long distance, while the other groups were raving about how many they saw and how active they were! I guess we were just out of luck on the day..took a bit of the shine off a great experience but would still recommend!
      Amazing, unique and memorable!

We had the most incredible kayak with our teen kids and were lucky enough to witness a seal catching and feeding on a big octopus, right up close! It was an amazing experience and a highlight of our trip. The lovely, capable guides looked after us so warmly and we felt safe in their hands being on the ocean. As our family had some experience kayaking, our guide took us out a little further to see more of the seal colony and landscape which was great. Highly recommend this trip and it was worth the money for this unique experience.

It’s my most memorable part in kaikoura. The tour guy is talkative to the tourists and she is willing to take picture for us who provided the most she can
Close up Encounter with the Seals

Thanks Ru for a fun evening and all the great information about the area and it's wildlife. Kaikoura Kayaks were spot on with safety and introduction to sea kayaking for newbies.
      Better do your own walk
      Hendrik_L, Jan 2023
Better watch the seals from land. It's free and you see more. It's just a peddle off shore where you see some seals lazy on the rocks.
      Response from Host, Jan 2023
Hi Hendrik, Thank you for the feedback. We pride ourselves on running a fun and enjoyable Wildlife Kayaking Tour around the beautiful Kaikoura Peninsula and we are sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy yourself while out on the water with us and the seals were lazing on the rocks. Marine life interaction is always different as wild animals are unpredictable in their natural habitat. NZ Fur Seals are nocturnal mammals therefore spend time resting on rocks during the daytime however we often encounter them in the water throughout our tours too. We believe viewing and encountering Seals from a kayak is a very different experience and far less intrusive than viewing seals while walking on land. You also have the chance to explore areas you cannot access easily by foot. Studies also show that seals are more relaxed and don’t feel threatened when being approached from a kayak. Kind regards, The Kaikoura Kayaks team.
