Viator buy up multiple tickets under the guise of doing travelers a service. This prevents people from buying tickets directly from the railways as they appear to be fully booked. Viator then sell them at greatly inflated prices. The railway price for our first class ticket was 5000 LKR and Viator charged is 22000 LKR. We bought our tickets 13 days prior to departure and 4 days before leaving Kandy the agent for Viator contacts is saying the train was fully booked and he would try and get us 2 or 3 class tickets. We engaged in numerous messaging via WhatsApp, repeating over and over that we had booked and paid on 19August, we sent screen shots of our electronic tickets from Viator, pointing out that the tickets said a mobile ticket would be accepted. all to no avail. I contacted Viator numerous times who were firstly slow to respond and secondly and frustratingly, just forwarded my emails back to the agent. The agent was not the problem, just the poor person caught in the middle of a very angry tourist and Viator. On the day prior to departure the agent told us he had managed to get 2 first class tickets for our journey that he would "give" us. We were relieved and made arrangements with our Airbnb host and booked a driver to get us to the station. At 10pm, on the night before leaving, we received another message saying we could not go on the train at 11 am (as we had paid for) but had to go at 8.55. We had no choice but to contact our airbnb host at that late hour and make changes with the driver. 4 of our 6 days in Kandy were ruined through stress and frustration. We will not use Viator or associated companies again. Viator claim that feedback is important to them, but I doubt bro much if anything will change.
