What To Expect

Experience fun the way Americans did 100 years ago at the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum in North Tonawanda, New York — just 25 minutes from Niagara Falls, NY.

The museum is one of the last existing wooden carrousel complexes in the US. Today, the building contains a large carving shop, a woodworking shop, a paint shop, a storage area, an upholstery shop, a machine shop and a roundhouse where carrousels were assembled and tested before shipping. The complex is a series of seven interconnected structures which once housed all of the manufacturing components of the Allan Herschell Company. It is listed on both the New York State and National Registers of Historic Sites.

Inside, enjoy everything from glittering carrousels to scholarly archives.

There’s a historic carrousel — 40 feet in diameter with 36 hand-carved horses and over 580 lights — and a small, 1940s aluminum carrousel known as the Kiddie Carrousel, located in the Children’s Gallery. Also, check out the Kiddieland Testing Park Exhibit, featuring four refurbished kiddie rides from the factory’s postwar baby boom era, as well as a picnic pavilion and admissions house.

There’s an Artizan-style ‘D’ band organ. The Wurlitzer Music Roll Department is a one-of-a-kind exhibit that shows how carrousel music was made. In the wood-carving shop, see how blocks of wood were transformed into horses for the carrousels. And the Lockman Collection displays the changes of carrousel animals over a period of 60 years.

Before leaving, be sure to stop by the gift shop for carrousel-inspired collectibles and toys. Also, purchase tickets, memberships, music rolls and more.

This is a trip back to childhood for...
TERESAA_M, Oct 2016
This is a trip back to childhood for anyone who loved carousel rides! There was only one family of 6 besides the two of us at the time the gate opened for admission. As a result, we were blessed to have Barb give us a private tour. Her knowledge was amazing, and the enthusiasm is shared by all the volunteers who were there. The history of how the horses are built and seeing the tools used and how the music comes to be -- well, ya just gotta go!
