What To Expect

This tour takes place aboard Spirit of the Wild, a spacious, catamaran specially designed to travel smoothly on the Gordon River and fitted with a unique hybrid propulsion system that allows you to cruise quietly on the Gordon River.

Depart Strahan and pass by Hells Gates, a narrow opening where the Southern Ocean meets Macquarie Harbour. As you take in the small gap—just 240 feet (80 meters)—it’s not hard to see how it got its ominous name from early sailors. Then head across the harbor, making your way to the lower reaches of the Gordon River as you pass by trout and salmon farms and the waterfront rainforest landscape of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

Disembark at Sarah Island, a former penal colony from the 1820s and 1830s, and watch a theatrical presentation to learn about its history, including how the island was once an important Australian shipyard, where the boats were built by convicts.

Onboard the boat, you are welcome to visit the deck for fresh air and views and enjoy a delicious, chef-prepared lunch. Your Gordon River catamaran experience ends when you return to Strahan at the cruise terminal.

A great cruise with a good lunch
Sanjna_U, Apr 2024
Gordon river is magical. The guides were wonderful and informative. Lunch was good, and even had a vegan option (you have to ask them on the day). You can see why it's a world heritage area. My only feedback is that we had one more walk/activity to do.

The passage through hells gate. The silent cruise so far up the Gordon river. The weather on the days was flat calm. The captains explanations on the video was excellent.
The best day out!

The whole cruise was one of the best experiences of my life. The scenery was world class, it was informative, the food was delicious, it was exciting and too beautiful for words to describe. Just do it you won’t be disappointed..
Amazing

The weather was great and the river so calm. The whole experience was even better the second time and I will be recommending for anybody to do and see this beautiful but isolated part of our state

Scenery food, informative narrative the visit to Sarah island was interesting and I felt the guide was more real about what the convicts had suffered ( I thought port Arthur was more about the officials and the plight of the convicts somewhat sanitised) it was a lovely cruise
Rainy days & Mondays

Sadly the day we went, was a miserable day. Rained for most of it, made it hard to take pics. The staff are wonderful, the food was great. Sarah island was a highlight.
Very enjoyable and a great day all round.

The cruise was professionally conducted. The crew were informative and friendly. Lunch was served efficiently and was abundant and tasty. The trip out of the harbour was interesting as was the cruise on the river. The weather was perfect as was the whole cruise.
A must do

Wonderful day learning so much of our countries history along the way. Amazing scenery both on water and on Sarah Island.
A fabulous day cruising on the Gordon River from Strahan with friendly, helpful staff on board.

We enjoyed the Gordon River Cruise from Strahan. The crew were happy, friendly and would help you if you needed some help or advice. The lunch supplied was wonderful and the visit to Sarah Island was very interesting. The Captain took us close to the island to spot the birds, the different types of trees and also showed us the salmon farming in the river. Also the staff in the Cruise office were also friendly and advised us where to get some coffee before going onboard.
A memorable trip

We were fortunate we had good weather. We were impressed with the reflection off the pristine water of the Gordan River and the excellent commentary by the guide at Sarah Island. Lunch was also very good. Suggestions for improvement: use bigger coffee cups.
Not to be missed!

The harmony of the Gordon River was awesome. I loved hearing about the Sarah Island history. The tour guides made it so interesting.

Boarding was smooth. Commentary was very good. Lunch was excellent. A serene peaceful experience. A beautiful clear day. Staff attentive
Worth the price.
Melissa_T, Feb 2024
Breathtaking cruise up the Gordon River and very interesting stroll around Sarah Island. Friendly staff, and informational videos on board. Lunch was nice, though the bread rolls were extremely stale. No drinks or sweets included. I'd rather pay an extra $10 o the ticket price and get a coffee and a piece of cake with lunch, instead of having to purchase separately.

All of it excellent; the entrance to Macquarie Harbour and Sarah Islands were probably the highlights for me. The buffet lunch surprisingly good! Loved all the outside deck space.
Gordon River Cruise awesome experience
Allen_G, Feb 2024
We opted for the upper deck premium package. Recommended to anyone doing this cruise. Service was excellent, staff were friendly, professional and efficient. We were well fed, kept in drinks and our every need catered for. The commentary was informative without the prattle. Our Captain Ross was a wonderful, professional seaman with well honed skills. Could not speak highly enough about this experience. If heading that way, don’t miss this opportunity for an incredible time.
Peaceful but beautiful experience
