Strahan trip ideas
The most popular way to experience these sand dunes is to feel the rush of wind in your face as you race down them on a sandboard. Tall, dusty, and with a soft cushion for landing, the largest dunes can create heart-pumping runs as you slide your way toward the shoreline. If you want to appreciate the sheer size of the dunes, opt for a quad bike or ATV tour through the sand.
There is no admission charge to visit the dunes, should you decide to see them on your own. From the picnic area it’s possible to walk through the dunes to Ocean Beach, the largest in Tasmania; the hike takes about 90 minutes return.
The dunes are 8.6 miles (14 km) north of Strahan along the road toward Zeehan. Sandboarding tours and quad bike tours depart from the center of Strahan. There’s no public transportation to the dunes so you’ll have to drive, hire a taxi, or join a guided tour.
West coast winters can be rainy and brisk, so the best time to visit the Henty Sand Dunes is during the summer and fall (October to April).
Sandwiched between Macquarie Harbour and the rainforest, the remote town of Strahan ranks among the best destinations in Tasmania to get away from it all. To experience the region’s natural beauty, take a cruise along the Gordon River, journey through the forest on the West Coast Wilderness Railway, spend a day basking in the sun on Ocean Beach, or make the short hike to Hogarth Falls from People’s Park in town.
