Overview

Spend a day discovering Europe’s highest active volcano and lava caves on this Mt. Etna tour. What To Expect

Meet your guide at either your Taormina or Giardini Naxos hotel or meeting point. With your group together, travel in the direction of Rifugio Sapienza, the base station at the foot of Mt. Etna. Enjoy stops along the way to soak up the views, and learn about the history and geology of Sicily’s most famous and fearsome volcano.

Hop out of your transport at Rifugio Sapienza, and trek up the volcano’s slopes, along one of the Parco dell’Etna trails that rise to an altitude of 6,562 feet (2,000 meters). If you want to ascend higher, speak to your guide on the day. Other options are available to continue by cable car and minibus, although this is at an extra cost that is payable locally.

Chat with the alpine guides as you walk, then return back down the volcano by minibus and cable car.

Back down at ground level, it’s time to head underground and visit a lava cave with the help of torches and helmets. After exploring the long volcanic cave, start your journey back. Enjoy a final stop along the way at an organic farm in Zafferana, and sample some local delicacies such as wine, honey, and olive oil.

Your Mt. Etna day trip then ends with a drop-off at your original departure point.

Loved the tour! Pepe, our driver was so knowledgeable about Catania and Mt Etna. He provided lots of history on both. The gondola ride up the volcano was beautiful and almost surreal being on top of this amazing creation. Be prepared and dress accordingly because it was quite cold. Fortunately we were able ti rent boots and jackets which helped tremendously. The summit was cold and windy. We purchased some olive oil, liquors and olives all from the Mt Etna region. Take the opportunity to do this tour. It’s a fabulous experience way to get up close with a volcano 😊👍

Very educational and fun. It was good to have the choice of different options for hiking once we arrived at the base camp. I also love it that you can take a piece of lava home dor a souvenir. This is a " must do" when visiting Taormina.

Pepe, our trained naturalist guide, was very informative. He arrived on time at our hotel and picked up 4 additional passengers forr our tour. Pepe is very caring, funny and very knowlegable about a wide variety of topics involving Sicily and Mt Etna. As Seniors, we were a bit surprised about the physical stamina needed on the mountain. We opted for the "Cable & 4x4 minibus" tour...78Euro per person...to go to 2900meters on the mountain. Very interesting, exciting and fun...but also a challenge because of altitude. Other options include a lower elevation walk with guide, or an ATV 4wheeler group tour. Extra jackets can be rented on the mountain for 5Euro each. Other warm gear can be purchased. For us it was very windy and cold. Check the weather before you go. HIGHLY recommend this tour which includes a stop for local food and wine products.

Simone was an amazing host and even though the weather was atrocious and we didn't have the proper wet weather clothes so couldn't go trekking (other members of the group did) he kept it all very lively with good facts and music in the minibus on the way back. We also had a mix of nationalities in the group but he made sure every one was included. Taster session was good with lots of different olive oil, jams and drinks to try.

Mt. Etna itself was cool to go to but the actual tour (driving there and the wine tasting) was boring.

Guiseppe picked us up right on time at the meeting point and we were joined by 5 others. He told us all about the sites on the drive to Mt Etna! The Mt Etna tours once you get to the base of the volcano do cost extra unless you choose you just hike around on your own from the base. We chose the Gondola ride up where another tour guide met us. It was 78 euro per person. Guiseppe then took us into Ragalna (a small town close by) to a winery where we tasted 4 different wines and had a FULL food tasting, alll of it so delicious! That was an additional 45 euro per person. We were picked up at 9:15am and dropped back off by 5:15pm so it was more of a full day experience.
Underwhelming tour experience at on stunning site

While we enjoyed spending the day on magnificent Mount Etna, this tour left me feeling unimpressed and maybe even shorted. This is because the tour I was on didn't exactly include 2 out of 6 things that it advertises: - The tour lists "Trek along the Parco dell’Etna trails with an alpine guide" which was not offered to our group (2 families X 4 people). Once we arrived to Rifugio Sapienza our guide only offered the option of taking the cable car up at additional cost of 78 euros per person or hanging out by yourself at Rifugio Sapienza. In other words taking us treking or any other organized activity that didn't include additional cost wasn't offered. Mind you, this stop lasts 2 hours. - The tour also lists "Relax at an organic farm and enjoy samples of wine and other produce" and the guide mentioned it in the briefing too. However, once we got back together after the stop at Rifugio Sapienza, our guide said that we will have a tasting at the shop in Rifugio Sapienza instead because "the farm requires you to book for lunch and noone in the group wants to have lunch". This left us all confused as lunch part was never mentioned, in the tour advert or during the tour up until that time and as it often happens with families with children we have all made different lunch arrangements, not knowing that will have an effect on the content of our tour. Being averse to awkward situations, we just went along with a tasting in a back of a shop which wasn’t ready for a while as it was clearly a surprise for them too. Our group was combined with another group which made for a very cramped experience, definitely not meeting the promise of “Relax at an organic farm”. I wonder if people that wrote all the great reviews got a different experience for some reason but I don’t think that this tour is worth the cost. Maybe at half the cost for the guide-narrated drive from Taormina to Rifugio Sapienza (some 1.5 hours).

Peppe was a good guide, and took me on a hike around the Silvestre Crater, however there was a lot of time waiting around for those who took the cable car to the top. It made for a much longer day than I was expecting.

Such a great day, our tour guide was Francesco he turned up in time and let us know that we were the only people in the tour. So basically had a private tour! Francesco was so knowledgeable, he told us loads about Etna while he drove us there, also answered a lot of our questions about Sicily. His English was really good too. The cable carts were shut when we got to Etna due to the weather (it was windy and snowing) this didn’t matter as we went in the quads instead. They were amazing and so much fun! Recommend doing the quad tour if you can, they were €65 per person.

We had an incredible day with our fabulous tour guide Lorenzo!!! Not only is he knowledgeable and passionate about Mt Etna and the surrounding area, but he is personable and made it fun!!! He included time for a break and lunch, others said they had no time for lunch. There is good food at a cafe for the chairlifts near Etna. Then we had the cave exploring and a stop at the winery on the way back to Taormina. It was a wonderful day and highly recommend Lorenzo!

This was one of our highlights of our trip to Sicily. Guiseppi our driver was very knowledgeable on Etna and even took us to see craters and explain how it was created. I will highly recommend this Etna tour with Etna Tribe.

Peppe was an amazing guide who shared the history of the area with us and explained the history of how the previous eruptions formed what we saw now. The olive oil and honey tasting was a delicious addition.

Don’t ever take a tour with this operator. They will try to sell you many things and they will try to deceive you. Stay away!!!

If that's what you're referring to, our customers are offered alternative activities to allow them to enjoy, the way they prefer, the time they have on the volcano. The basic tour involves trekking, the alternatives to trekking are a free choice, with their own price list, and are clearly stated by the guide before.
