The basics
A visit to the Omaka Aviation Centre is both educational and entertaining. History enthusiasts can enjoy learning about New Zealand’s involvement in the two World Wars, and practically anyone will be amazed by the aircraft on display. The Knights of the Sky exhibit is especially interesting as it presents items from Sir Peter Jackson’s personal collection, and includes dioramas of battle scenes created by Weta Workshop, who was involved in the production of The Lord of the Rings films.
As well as visiting the center, travelers can also opt for a scenic flight in a vintage aircraft. Most travelers spend an hour or two at the museum while passing through Blenheim and the Marlborough wine country. Some guided tours include wine tasting at vineyards with a visit to the center.

Things to know before you go
- Tickets to the two exhibits are sold separately, although it’s possible to buy a combined ticket.
- Entrance is free for kids under five, and discounts are available for New Zealand students, seniors, and families.
- Guided highlights tours for each exhibit run twice a day.
How to get there
The Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre is about 3 miles (5 kilometers) outside central Blenheim, beside the Omaka Airfield. Unless you’re traveling on a guided tour, the best way to get out there is in your own vehicle. The location is well sign-posted from the central town.
When to get there
The center is open every day, with slightly reduced hours in the winter. If you happen to be in Blenheim during Easter, you may be able to visit the biennial three-day Classic Fighters Airshow. It features aircraft from the Dangerous Skies World War II exhibit (and thus that exhibit will be closed for the duration of the show).
Marlborough Wine Tasting
The Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre lies right in the heart of New Zealand’s largest wine-producing country. Wine lovers shouldn’t miss the opportunity to try some of the world’s finest Sauvignon Blanc. You can join a guided tour of wineries, which is a convenient way of enjoying a few glasses without worrying about driving, or drop by The Wine Station, beside Blenheim Railway Station. Once there, you can choose from a huge variety of wine and pour your own samples through special vending machines.
