June 13 until September 13, between 8:30 am and 6:30 pm
Route des Tissières, Les Bossons, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, 74400

The basics

To get to the base of the glacier, you can either hike up from the village of Les Bossons or take the Bossons Glacier chairlift. From the top of the lift, you’ll find an interpretative path leading the way to Chalet du Glacier des Bossons with signs detailing the history of the glacier over the years. The chalet terrace offers incredible views of the tongue of the glacier and the crevasses of the Pyramid Plateau. From here, experienced hikers can set out for high-altitude self-guided treks or guided tours.

The Mer de Glace Chamonix Glacier Train

The Mer de Glace is the largest glacier in France and one of the most popular tourist attractions in Chamonix. An old funicular train, the Montenvers Train, whisks visitors from the center of Chamonix to a stunning viewpoint above the glacier. From there, visitors can descend into a man-made ice cave by cable car, tour the glacier museum, or take a hike back down to the valley floor.
