The Basics
The Golden Mile makes a great jumping-off point for exploring the area. Many tours include the Golden Mile along with other Durban sights, such as City Hall, Durban Harbour, and the Durban Botanic Gardens. To maximize your time on the 4-mile (6-kilometer) waterfront, cruise along the promenade on a bike tour. And, be sure to get up early one day to catch the sunrise from the beach.

Paul was waiting when our ship docked and we were the first ones off and away- really easy and convenient. The botanical gardens were great and he put us on a golf cart with a guide from the gardens who was very knowledgeable and showed us all sorts of things we would have missed on our own. We also got to see it all in relative quiet before the ship excursions arrived! Paul then walked us around Durban's historical buildings and the fascinating Zulu markets, warning us when it was / wasn't safe to take photos. We always felt safe with him and he had a real insight into local daily life here. The time spent walking around these areas seemed a really authentic experience. He also drove and stopped for us along the waterfront area explaining how they've stopped shark attacks in recent years.

The Golden Mile offers ample shopping, eating, and drinking opportunities. Stop at the local markets to pick up souvenirs, spices, and street food.
The boardwalk is accessible to wheelchairs and strollers.
How to Get There
Durban’s traffic is hectic—if you’re staying in the city center, the Golden Mile is best visited on a sightseeing tour. If you’re staying close to the Golden Mile, you can easily get around on foot, by bike, or in one of the popular Zulu rickshaws.
When to Get There
Durban’s subtropical climate and the always-warm Indian Ocean make the Golden Mile a year-round destination for sunseekers. Summer (December through March) is typically hot but gets more rainfall, while winter (June through August) is drier but warm enough to enjoy the beach and swimming in the sea.
What Else to Do on the Golden Mile
While you could spend all day relaxing on the beach, the Golden Mile has several other attractions appropriate for all ages. Start with a visit to the Moses Mabhida Stadium—an architectural wonder and home of the 2010 soccer World Cup. Next, check out Mini Town, a miniature replica of Durban. At the far end of the promenade, discover diverse marine life, animal encounters, and performances at uShaka Marine World.
